General Information
What is signature notarization?
A service carried out for documents to be used in Brazil.
It is the notarization, by a consular authority, of signatures placed on various documents.
Signature notarization can be done by authenticity or by similarity. It is recommended to consult the recipient of the document about the required type of notarization.
Legalization of Foreign Documents
Documents issued by authorities in Cambodia, Laos, or Thailand must be legalized by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of those countries before being submitted to the Consular Section.
The Consular Section only verifies the authenticity of the signature from the authorities of these ministries, not the content of the document. For the document to be valid in Brazil, it must also be translated into Portuguese by a sworn translator registered with a Brazilian Board of Trade. This translation can only be done in Brazil.
If you have any doubts about whether your document will be accepted in Brazil, you should contact the institution in Brazil that will receive the document, as they can provide guidance on any specific requirements of the process.
Notarization by authenticity
Notarization by authenticity requires that the document be signed in the presence of the consular authority. It is essentially an in-person service.
In some cases, the recipient organization requires that the notarization be done by authenticity, which can only be carried out in person by the signatory (examples: Federal Police passport application form and re-registration form with INSS and other public institutions).
Only the following signatures can be notarized by authenticity:
- Brazilians (only documents written in Portuguese)
- Foreigners residing in Brazil, temporarily or permanently, holding a valid RNM (only documents written in Portuguese)
Notarization by similarity
Notarization by similarity, performed by comparing signatures, is only possible if the signature is already registered with the Consular Section.
Signature notarization is a specific service. Requesting other consular services does not result in the registration of the signature at this office. To check if the signature to be notarized is registered at the Embassy, send an email to the Consular Section
At the Brazilian Embassy in Bangkok, the following signatures can be notarized by similarity:
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Laos
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand
- Brazilians (only documents written in Portuguese)
- Foreigners residing in Brazil, temporarily or permanently, holding a valid RNM (only documents written in Portuguese)
Issuance Time
The document is issued within 3 business days, starting after the presentation of all originals at the Embassy. The issuance time may be extended, if necessary.
The issuance time cannot be shortened, as necessary checks must be performed for the document's issuance. Requests for such will be disregarded.
Service Cost
The cost of the service can be found on the service fees page.
