HOW TO APPLY FOR CPF AS A BRAZILIAN CITIZEN
Registering for the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) is mandatory for Brazilian nationals of any age.
The CPF number is issued only once (unique and definitive), and it is not possible to register twice. The CPF number will be generated upon registration and recorded on the receipt provided to the applicant. The number must be kept in a safe place or memorised, as "CPF cards" are no longer issued.
Due to tax privacy regulations, those who have lost / forgotten their CPF number must retrieve it directly at one of the units of the Federal Revenue ("Receita Federal") in Brazil, as this matter cannot be solved at the Consulate. If necessary, the request can be done by proxy by a representative of the interested party. Further clarifications can be obtained by e-mail at: cpf.residente.exterior@receita.fazenda.gov.br
The service is free of charge.
- How to apply for your CPF
The application is online and should be performed entirely by the applicant. Follow the steps below:
1) click here and fill in the form.
- The "Voter ID" field on the form must be left blank.
- The browser's pop-up blocker must be disabled, otherwise it will not be possible to send
the request.
2) After clicking "send", a PDF file (FCPF) will be generated containing a service code. Save this file.
3) Send an email to cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br with the documents listed below, in PDF or JPEG format:
- Individual registration form (FCPF) generated on the website, duly filled in and signed;
- Identification document with your name, date of birth and nationality (for example: passport, national identification document, RNE/CRNM);
- "Selfie" holding open identification document (Brazilian ID, and, if it is old, hold a foreign ID, if you have it), close to face, for identity proof purposes;
- For children under 16, send a document that proves parentage (for example, the minor's foreign birth certificate) and father's or mother's "selfie", holding their own identification document (not the minor's).
As informed by the Internal Revenue Service, the average period for completing the analysis is 5 (five) business days. Receita Federal will use the e-mail provided in the FCPF to communicate directly with the applicants about their request.
