General questions
-
I need a new passport. What do I need to do?
Click here to access our page containing the instructions for requesting passports at the Embassy of Brazil in Abu Dhabi.
-
When should I apply for a new passport? Do I need to wait for my previous passport to expire before applying for a new one?
NEVER wait for your passport to expire to apply for a new one. When your passport is 1 (one) year from its expiry date, think about starting the procedures for obtaining a replacement, especially if you have a forthcoming trip. Frequently, to obtain an appointment time at the Embassy may take weeks and, during periods of high demand, months. If you wait to solve this problem on the eve of your trip, it is possible that you will not be able to book an appointment time before the date of your travel.
-
Can I apply for my new passport by mail/courier?
The Embassy of Brazil in Abu Dhabi does not issue passports by mail. All requests must be presented in person.
-
My passport is still valid, but it has no more blank pages left. Can I get a new one before its expiry date?
Yes, you can.
-
My passport is still valid, but I want to obtain a new one so that it remains valid for the same period as the foreign visa that I am applying for. Is this possible?
Yes, it is possible. But it is important to remember that, in general, the validity of a visa is not linked to the validity of the passport and, thus, it is not mandatory to obtain a new Brazilian passport just to synchronize it with the validity of the foreign visa.
-
I have an appointment for a passport in a few days, but I need to receive today the number of my new passport in order to book my ticket. Could the Embassy forward me this information beforehand?
No. The number of the new passport will only be informed on the day of its delivery.
-
Can I have more than one Brazilian passport?
No. Each Brazilian citizen can hold only one common Brazilian passport.

Today is Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday; I will be traveling tonight, but I have just discovered that my passport is expired, or has been lost, stolen or damaged. I need a new passport right away! What do I do?
The Embassy of Brazil in Abu Dhabi does not open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. If you only noticed the problem with your passport on the eve of your trip, there is nothing to do but to call the airline and ask to reschedule your ticket.
-
But doesn’t the Embassy have an emergency service on weekends and holidays?
The emergency service of the Embassy of Brazil in Abu Dhabi does not receive applications for consular documents. Passports are issued only on business days and during business hours.
-
I have to get a new passport urgently, but the Embassy doesn’t offer appointment times before the day I have to travel! What do I do?

Expiry date
-
What will be the expiry date of my new passport?
Passports for people over 18 (eighteen) years old are valid for 10 years. Passports for children between 4 (four) and 18 (eighteen) years old are valid for 5 years. Passports for children under 4 (four) years old follow the following rule:
- Children from 0 to 1 year old: 1 year
- Children from 1 to 2 years old: 2 years
- Children from 2 to 3 years old: 3 years
- Children from 3 to 4 years old: 4 years
However, if your previous passport has been lost or stolen, the validity of your new passport may be penalized.
-
I have hardly utilized my previous passport. Couldn't the Embassy, instead of issuing a new passport, simply extend the validity of my previous passport?
Extending the validity of a passport is no longer possible. Expired Brazilian passports must be replaced by a new passport, which will have a new number and a new expiry date.
-
I need to travel this week, but my passport will expire within a few days. Will this cause me any problems during my trip?
Possibly yes because, in fact, it is unlikely that you will be authorized to board at the airport. Each country and airline has specific rules on this matter but, in general, passports with have less than 6 (six) months until its expiry date are not accepted for international travel, sometimes even in the case of people returning to their home countries (for example, Brazilians traveling to Brazil). That is why the Embassy recommends that, when the passport has less than 1 (one) year left until its expiry date, its holder starts the procedures required to obtain its replacement.

I got divorced and, in the divorce sentence, the court granted me the custody over our. Can I then apply for their passports without the authorization of my former partner?
Not necessarily. If it is not expressly determined, in the text of the custody document, that you have the power to obtain, without the consent of your former partner, new passports for your children, it is necessary that the parent who lost custody also authorizes the new passports using the Parental Consent Form (to obtain it, click here; for the Portuguese version, click here).
-
My children live with me and I no longer have contact with my former partner. Can I apply for a child's passports without his/her consent?
No. In this case, ask a lawyer to obtain a sentence that authorizes you, without the participation of your former partner, to apply alone for your children's new passports. The sentence can be obtained either from the Brazilian courts, or from the courts of your country of residence. If the sentence issued by a non-Brazilian court of law has not been delivered in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, it is also necessary to obtain a sworn translation of the document.

I can't obtain the Electoral Certificate! What do I do?
If you didn’t manage to obtain the certificate due to a technical problem or to difficulties while using the computer, try accessing the TSE website in another internet browser, or ask for help from someone with more experience with computers.
If everything's OK with your computer, maybe you are not getting the Electoral Certificate because you have electoral fines to be paid. If that is the case, click here, make the payment and, after a few days, get your Electoral Certificate normally. However, if your electoral situation is more complicated (for example, if your electoral card was cancelled, people who have never obtained an electoral card or young people who should have obtained it this year but, because of the closing of the electoral registry due to the elections, failed in doing so), you will not be able to obtain a Electoral Certificate. It is important to note, however, that the lack of the original documentation may create difficulties for the issuance of the new passport. In this case, the new passport will not be delivered on the same day of the appointment.

However, if you got married abroad, you must first register the foreign marriage certificate here at the Embassy or directly at a notary in Brazil (for more information, click here). It is important to note that if the certificate does not expressly state that you have reverted to your maiden/bachelor name, it will not be possible to change your name in the new passport. I am Brazilian, but I also have another nationality. Can I travel to Brazil using my non-Brazilian passport?
At first, yes, but it is not recommended. If you travel to Brazil with a foreign passport, the Federal Police may treat you as a foreign citizen, limiting your period of stay. In this sense, there are cases of Brazilians who traveled to Brazil with foreign passports and, on the day of departure to return abroad, were fined by the Federal Police for having exceeded their maximum period of stay.
