Statement by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, Ambassador Norberto Moretti, at the interactive session with the Executive Director of the UNFPA - June 5th, 2024
Mme. Executive Director,
I commend the work of the UNFPA in implementing the three transformative results of its current Strategic Plan and its significant impact in reducing maternal deaths and unintended pregnancies, in many developing regions. Despite current global challenges and concerning downward trends in its core resources, the UNFPA has been able to deploy concrete and impactful results on its programmatic mandate in light of the imperative to accelerate progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.
In Brazil, the collaboration with the UNFPA has been crucial to advance our countries priorities, through our Country Programme. We highly commend our continued cooperation.
Madam Executive Director,
I would like to concentrate my intervention on three main topics, namely (1) ICPD30, (2) the optimization of the UNFPA processes and (3) priorities for Latin America and the Caribbean.
As far as ICPD30 is concerned, Brazil reiterates the importance of strengthening the outcomes of the 57th Session of CPD, which aims to contribute to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda and the Cairo Program of Action. Since all 17 SDGs are intertwined, we strongly believe goals and targets must be dealt with through an integrated approach and there is a clear role for the UNDPA and its Strategic Plan in this regard.
Secondly, Brazil believes that the organizational changes underway, including the optimization of UNFPA headquarters and the establishment of new divisions focused on data, analytics, and strategic partnerships, are right steps towards a more effective and efficient UNFPA. In this regard, we reiterate that these changes should have the implementation of the UNFPA’s mandate in light of the needs and priorities of developing countries as a beacon.
Thirdly, we appreciate the updates provided today by the UNFPA Regional Director on the UNFPA’s priorities for Latin America and the Caribbean. It is extremely important to see disaggregated regional information and data on the agency’s work for the region, including those related to project implementation and allocation of resources. Capacity-building and South-South Cooperation, including among LAC countries through the “Brazil-UNFPA Program for the Promotion of Trilateral South-South Cooperation”, are key in this regard.
Thank you.
