Statement by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, Ambassador Norberto Moretti, at the reception held by the Permanent Mission of Colombia on the occasion of the adoption of the resolution that stablished July 25 as the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent - August 13th, 2024
Mr. President,
We are very grateful that Colombia invited Brazil to join this initiative, which is fully in tune with the traditional priority given to the promotion of the rights of women and people of African Descent and to the combat against all forms of discrimination in Brazil's foreign policy.
I also express Brazil's deep gratitude to the many delegations that cosponsored the draft from the floor today.
As it is well-known, not only does Brazil support the full and effective implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action but we also actively and constructively participated in its negotiations. We regret that we have come to a point where language referencing it is put to vote.
At the same time, Brazil and Colombia have been transparent since the beginning of this process in their willingness to keep the text procedural and consensual. We have also held inclusive and comprehensive negotiations. For those reasons, my delegation will abstain.
Thank you.
