Discurso do Representante Permanente, Embaixador Sérgio França Danese, em nome dos países do Consenso de Brasília, em reunião do Comitê de Descolonização sobre a Questão das Ilhas Malvinas - 18 de junho de 2024 (texto em inglês)
Intervention on behalf of Brasilia Consensus in the Special Decolonization Committee (C-24) - Question of the Malvinas Islands
June 18th, 2024
Madam Chair,
I have the honor to participate in this debate on behalf of the Member States of the Brasilia Consensus.
We extend our greetings to the Chair and members of the Board elected to carry forward the work of the Special Committee Charged on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.
I would like to express our appreciation for the participation in this meeting of Her Excellency, Mrs. Diana Mondino, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, as well as of the delegation accompanying her.
Madam Chair,
On behalf of the Member States of the Brasilia Consensus, we wish to share the “Special Declaration on the Question of the Malvinas Islands" that our Ministers of Defense and Ministers of Foreign Affairs agreed on November 2023 during the First South American Meeting of Dialogue.
In this declaration, the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs of the countries of South America re-affirmed their support for the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute between the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland over the Malvinas, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas.
Madam Chair,
We reiterate the regional interest in the resumption of bilateral negotiations that would allow, as soon as possible, the long-standing sovereignty dispute regarding the Question of the Malvinas Islands to reach a solution in
accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations and the declarations of the CELAC, MERCOSUR, among other regional and multilateral fora.
The Member States of the Consensus underline that the military presence of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the Malvinas, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas is contrary to the region's policy of adherence to a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute. They reiterated their call to resume negotiations towards a definitive solution and to put an end to British unilateral activities in the disputed area that violate UN General Assembly resolutions, especially resolutions 31/49 and 41/11.
Thank you.
