Declaração da Delegação do Brasil durante reunião do Conselho de Segurança sobre a situação no Sudão e no Sudão do Sul - 13 de dezembro de 2022 (texto em inglês)
Statement by the Delegation of Brazil on the Reports of the Secretary-General on the Sudan and South Sudan
December 13th, 2022
Let me begin by thanking Special Representative Haysom, Ambassador Biang and General Tai Gituai for their briefings.
I also welcome the delegation of South Sudan to this session.
We join the United Nations, the African Union, and IGAD in calling upon South Sudan’s Transitional Government and the parties to the Revitalized Agreement to engage in a constructive dialogue and address the implementation of the early benchmarks of the Roadmap to a Peaceful and Democratic End to the Transitional Period.
We encourage inclusive negotiations among the parties, focusing on the reconstitution of the Political Parties Council and the National Elections Commission.
Brazil takes note with appreciation of the support provided by the African Union and IGAD to the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement.
We acknowledge, in particular, the Community of Sant’Egidio for their relevant involvement with non-signatory groups through the peace process.
We also commend the continued graduation of the Necessary Unified Forces.
The unification of the armed forces is a vital pillar of South Sudan’s institutional development.
We are hopeful that the Necessary Unified Forces will soon become a symbol of national unity.
We are concerned about the humanitarian situation in South Sudan as food insecurity levels remain alarmingly high.
We commend UNMISS and all the partners that have provided relief.
The safety of humanitarian workers is worrisome and we call upon the Transitional Government to redouble its efforts to address this issue.
In conclusion, we underscore Brazil’s support for UNMISS.
The mission has remained crucial to provide protection for civilians in conflict-affected areas and internally displaced persons who flee grim humanitarian conditions.
It remains central to a peaceful transitional order in South Sudan.
I thank you Mr President.
