Visit Visas (VIVIS)

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to Brazil is determined by:

1. The purpose of your trip to Brazil
2. Your nationality

Check our Visa Requirements by Country page if you believe you may be exempt from the visa requirement based on your nationality and the purpose of your trip to Brazil.

The visit visa will be issued to foreigners traveling to Brazil for staying up to 90 days without purposes of immigration or the exercise of paid activity (daily allowances, artistic paychecks, compensation or other travel expenses are allowed). Visit visas can be granted for those traveling for tourism, business, transit, artistic or sports activities, study, volunteer work, or to attend to conferences, seminars or meetings, among other purposes - provided there is no remuneration in Brazil and the stay does not exceed 90 days. 

Important: table below (visa fee) should be matched with your nationality / country that issued the passport. If you have a green card you should not apply using USA visa fee. 

Exception: Passport for refugee from the Department of Homeland Security. Visa fee $185

How to apply

The consulate does not offer in-person VIVIS applications. Check below options for delivering your application.

1)    VISA APPLICATION USING AFFILIATED VISA SERVICE AGENCIES:

 The couriers are allowed to drop off and pick up the visa applications from Monday to Friday, 9:00am-1pm without appointments.

 The Consulate is not responsible for the services of visa agencies.

THE CONSULATE DOES NOT PROVIDE URGENT OR PRIORITY SERVICES, HENCE NO EXPEDITING FEES ARE CHARGED BY THIS CONSULATE.

2)    BY MAIL:

We process visas submitted by mail within 15 business days.

Applicants may submit required documentation by mail to the following address:

Along with the required documentation for the visa, applicants must include an additional self-addressed, pre-paid return envelope (Priority or Priority Express flat-rate) from the U.S. Postal Service. This envelope will be used to return the visa to the applicant, and may be folded in half to fit inside the original sending envelope.

Applications by mail should also include the applicant’s contact information (address, phone number, and email) in case contact is necessary. Return envelopes with addresses outside the United States will not be accepted.

Applicants should be sure to keep a copy of the tracking numbers of both the incoming and return envelopes. Before contacting the Consulate in reference to the whereabouts of a document, first check the tracking information of the envelopes at www.usps.com. The Consulate does not assume responsibility for any delays or loss by the postal service.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Passport (signed, valid up to end of Brazil trip, 2 visa pages free)
2. Proof of residence in the U.S. (visa or Green Card) - for non US citizens
3. Visa Application Form Receipt (RER)
4. Passport-style photo (2” x 2”, white background)
5. U.S. Postal Service Money Order (see table of VIVIS fees above)
6. Proof of residency at our jurisdiction: District of Columbia (DC), North Carolina (NC), Delaware (DE), Kentucky(KY), Maryland(MD), Ohio(OH), Virginia(VA), West Virginia(WV) and all Military Bases, except Guam.
7. Trip purpose / letter of intent - reason for travelling to Brazil
8. Income information: Proof of financial capability during the stay in Brazil (i.e., copy of bank/credit card statements or paychecks/paystubs).
9. Itinerary: Flight Confirmation (purchased ticket showing entrance into and exit from Brazil) , hotel reservations, invitation from host 
10. U.S. Postal Service Priority or Priority Express envelope, pre-paid (this will be used to mail your passport back to you)
    
     

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BUSINESS-RELATED VIVIS APPLICATIONS

In addition to the materials listed above, applicants traveling to Brazil for business (company meetings, consulting, auditing, site visits, signing of contracts, journalistic activities, cruise or airline crew members, etc.) must present a letter from either their U.S. or Brazilian company. The letter should be on company stationery and signed by a manager/director/supervisor, stating the following information:

• Nature of company’s/organization’s business or activities in Brazil;
• Applicant’s title and/or job description;
• Nature of business and activities to be conducted by applicant in Brazil;
• Name(s) and address(es) of Brazilian company(ies) with which applicant will conduct business;
• Contact(s) in Brazil: name(s), phone number(s) and corresponding position(s);
• Expected travel dates;
• Affirmation of company’s financial support of applicant while in Brazil;
• Affirmation that applicant will not provide any technical assistance or perform any salaried work while in Brazil (such activities require a VITEM V temporary work visa)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS

In addition to the visa application requirements stated above, applicants who are younger than 18 years of age at the time of application must present the following additional materials:

• Original birth certificate and one copy
• Authorization for Issuance of Brazilian Visa for a Minor, signed by both parents
• Signatures must be notarized unless both parents are present at the Consulate to sign the form in front of a Consular authority.
• If only one parent is listed on birth certificate, only that parent’s signature is required.
• If one parent has sole custody of applicant, a notarized copy of the court order awarding sole custody and exclusive parental rights must be presented.
• If one parent is deceased, a death certificate must be presented.
• For children of Brazilian parent(s): Declaração de Não-Cidadania declaring that the applicant is not a Brazilian citizen, signed by Brazilian parent(s), if applicable.
• Copy of passports or other form of photo ID for both parents.
  • The name on the parent’s photo ID must match parent’s name on the child’s birth certificate. If said parent has changed his or her name since the issuance of the birth certificate, the parent must present documentation showing proof of the name change (e.g. marriage certificate or court order).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CITIZENS OF CERTAIN COUNTRIES

(1) Below requirements are also mandatory for non U.S citizens holding a Department of Homeland Security Travel Document or travelers holding passports issued by a different country than their nationality.
