The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not have a budget to cover medical costs, such as consultations, medicines, hospitalizations or medical treatment of Brazilian citizens abroad. It is therefore recommended to take out international health insurance before each trip. More information is available on the Traveler's Health and Health Abroad pages > https://www.gov.br/saude/pt-br/assuntos/saude-de-a-a-z/s/saude-do-viajante
https://www.travelmate.com.br/area-da-saude-no-exterior-como-funciona/
If the patient does not have medical insurance or resources to arrange payment for the services provided to him/her, he/she may try to negotiate his/her installment plan with the hospital authorities.
In emergency situations and proven inability to pay for hospital treatment, some hospitals have a social assistance service with which the patient could request exemption from expenses on an exceptional basis and according to the criteria of each institution.
In the event of the death of a Brazilian residing, domiciled or even in transit, the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington, DC must be immediately informed so that it can take legal action regarding the issuance of all relevant documentation.
The body can be transferred to Brazil, however, this decision involves a series of legal and bureaucratic measures without which transport will not be possible. The expenses of embalming and transporting mortal remains to Brazil are borne by the family of the deceased.
Under the terms of the Brazilian legislation in force relevant to the matter, under the supervision of the National Health Surveillance Department, Health Division of Ports, Airports and Borders in Brazil, the requirements for the transport of bodies of deceased persons are as follows:
1. in any situation, transport can only be carried out after authorization from the Administration of the airport of departure, to which the following must be shown:
- original death certificate;
- certificate of embalming or conservation or incineration;
- Medical certificate indicating that it is not an infectious-contagious disease;
- authorization for the removal of the corpse granted by the police authority where the death occurred (free original mortuary transit).
2. in cases of death caused by a contagious disease, or susceptible to quarantine, or with the potential for infection, it will also be required that the body be contained in a hermetically closed metallic urn.
3. it will also be required that the mortal remains be contained in impermeable and sealed urns, in the case of cremated bodies.
4. there is no specific treatment for transporting deceased victims of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Although Portuguese legislation does not allow any reference to the cause of death in the death record, it is essential, for the purposes of health inspection at the airport of destination, to attach to the remaining documentation a medical certificate that rules out the possibility of an infectious disease, particularly in interdiction cases mentioned in Art. 16 of resolution 33/2011 of the Brazilian health surveillance authority (ANVISA). This document must be signed by a licensed physician or specialized institution.
The presentation of the above certificate is waived in cases of transport of ashes.
At the request of any heirs or on its own initiative, the Consulate General may order or proceed "ex officio", with two witnesses, to the listing of the assets left by a deceased Brazilian abroad.
Transfer of Body or Ashes to Brazil
Due to lack of legal provision, the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington, DC does not have the funds or authorization to carry out the transfer of mortal remains to Brazil, nor to arrange for embalming, cremation or burial abroad. Such measures are the responsibility of the family of the deceased Brazilian.
Necessary measures:
IN THE CASE OF TRANSFER OF THE BODY TO BRAZIL, the Brazilian authorities determine that the documents below be presented:
1. Death Certificate issued by the Brazilian Consular Office (CLICK HERE for more information)
2. Certificate of transfer of the body (Official disposition, removal or transportation permit)
3. Embalming Certificate (Certificate of embalming - by US standard methods)
4. Health certificate issued by the funeral home stating that the cause of death did not occur as a result of an infectious disease and that the box covering the funeral urn complies with legal requirements.
In case of death caused by a contagious disease, or subject to quarantine, or with proven potential for infection, the body must be packed in a hermetically closed metallic urn;
Attention: All documents mentioned above (except consular death registration) must be apostilled at accredited US agencies.
IN THE CASE OF CREMATION, the Brazilian authorities determine that the documents below be presented:
1. Death Certificate issued by the Brazilian Consular Office (CLICK HERE for more information)
2. Cremation permit;
3. Cremation certificate;
4. The Brazilian authorities require that the ashes be transported in a waterproof and sealed bag.
Attention: All documents mentioned above (except consular death registration) must be apostilled at accredited US agencies.
IMPORTANT:
The Consulate General of Brazil in Washington, DC does not have the funds or legal authorization to carry out the transfer of mortal remains to Brazil, nor to arrange for embalming, cremation or burial abroad. Such measures are the responsibility of the family of the deceased Brazilian.
The funeral home in the United States must coordinate with the funeral home in Brazil, which will be responsible for all procedures relating to the entry and disembarkation of the body in Brazil and the documentation related to the burial.
The transport can only be carried out after authorization from the Airport Administration of departure. The contracted funeral home must obtain this authorization

ALERT! BEWARE OF THE JOB SCAM!
BEFORE THE PANDEMIC, the Consulate General of Brazil in Washington, DC was frequently consulted about companies in the US that offer employment to Brazilian citizens, and request that applicants bear the costs of traveling to the US for an interview, through the services of a specific travel agency (suggested by the scammers). Based on research done by the Consulate General, these job offers are believed to be part of a scam to get the candidate to transfer money to a fake travel agency.
