1) IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CANADIAN NATIONALS
For entry in Brazil up until September 30th 2023:
Canadian visitors do not need to apply for a visitor visa
Citizens from Canada are exempt from visitor visa to travel to Brazil for tourism, business, artistic and sports activities, and for other purposes (see below), for up to 90 days. This also covers travelers transiting through Brazil.
Visitors from Canada are granted a stay of up to 90 days, which can be extended once for the same period, providing the stay does not exceed 180 days within a 12-month period, from the date of the first entry.
For entry after October 1st 2023, Canadian nationals are required to obtain a visitor visa to enter Brazil.

3) RULES AND PURPOSES OF A VISITOR VISA
A visitor visa can be used for different purposes, in the same trip or on different occasions.
VIVIS holders are prohibited from engaging in paid employment in Brazil, but they are allowed to receive payments from the government, a Brazilian employer or a private entity for the purposes of daily allowances, artistic paychecks, compensation or travel expenses, as well as to receive cash prizes in sports, artistic or cultural competitions.
It may be granted to visitors for a short stay of up to 90 days, for the following purposes: Tourism and transit; Business (meetings, corporate fairs and events, seeking commercial opportunities, signing contracts); Non-corporate events (conferences, seminars, congresses, workshops, cultural meetings / fairs / events); Journalistic coverage, news reporting or filming; Auditing or consultancy; Adoption; Study, Supervised academic internship; Research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes and teaching (researchers, scientists, and visiting professors – no employment relationship); Artistic or sport activities; Volunteer services; Health treatment; Vessel or aircraft crew members, maritime workers; Family reunion (on the grounds of marriage by power of attorney).

Visa application form |
Fill out the Visa Request Form. Print the Visa Form Delivery Receipt (RER) and sign it in the designated box. In case of minor applicants, both parents must sign the Visa Form Delivery Receipt (RER) in the designated box. |

The passport must be valid for the entire period of the stay in the country, including applicant's date of departure. Must have at least two blank pages. Please note that pages reserved for amendments cannot be used for visa purposes. |

At least one of the following documents must be submitted: Bank statements containing the account holder's name, current balance and transactions from the last 3 months; and/or International credit card statements containing the card holder's name, available credit limit and transactions from the last 3 months; and/or The last 3 payslips. * As a reference, the applicant must have approximately US$ 150.00 per day available to cover expenses. |

Proof of regular immigration status in Canada |
All non-Canadians must provide proof of their immigration status in Canada, such as: valid visa, admission stamp on passport, valid study permit, valid work permit, permanent resident card. |

Application for minors |
If the applicant is under 18 years old, it is required: a) Parental Consent Form signed by both parents or legal guardians, duly notarized by a local notary. b) A document proving the relationship with the minor. Examples: one piece of I.D from each parent accompanied by the minor's birth certificate stating the parent's names; or parent's death certificate, when applicable; or a copy of a judicial document attesting the sole custody, when applicable. |

b) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTS REQUIRED DEPENDING ON THE PURPOSE OF THE VISITOR VISA
Visitor Visa (VIVIS) - Tourism and Transit
Tourism: sightseeing, informative trips, cultural trips, leisure, friend and family visit, etc.
Transit: a VIVIS will not be required in case of a stopover or flight connection in Brazil, as long as the visitor does not leave the international transit zone and holds a single ticket (under a single booking reference, stating both the origin and the final destination, regardless of multiple stops or multiple carriers). If the traveler does not benefit from visa waiver and holds separate tickets, having to go through border / passport control when disembarking, s/he must obtain a VIVIS.

Visitor Visa (VIVIS) – Business
Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purpose of engaging in business activities such as holding meetings, participating in corporate fairs and events, seeking commercial opportunities, signing contracts.
Please note: professional training and the provision of technical services are not regarded as business activities; in these cases, a Technical Assistance or a Technology Transfer – Work Visa (VITEM V) must be obtained.

The invitation letter must be printed on company letterhead and contain the following information: a) The applicant's full personal details, including job, position and function; b) Purpose of the trip (brief description of the activities) and intended length of stay; c) Details of the company and person in charge in Brazil (full name, telephone, e-mail etc.); d) If applicable, declaration that all the applicant's travel expenses will be covered, during the entire stay in Brazil, by the employer or by the Brazilian company / institution being visited. In case the invitation letter contains this information, the applicant will not have to present personal proof of sufficient financial means (item 5 above). Please note: If provided by the Brazilian counterpart, the signature on the invitation letter must be certified by a notary ("tabelião"). In case of corporate fairs and events, proof of participation / registration may be submitted instead of an invitation letter. |
Visitor Visa (VIVIS) – Non-corporate events (conferences, seminars, congresses etc.)
Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purpose of participating in various types of non-corporate events such as conferences, seminars, congresses, workshops, cultural meetings / fairs / events

If the applicant is going to attend the event as a spectator, only the proof of registration needs to be presented. If the applicant is going to take part as a speaker / guest, an invitation letter printed on company letterhead, containing the following information, must be presented: a) The applicant's full personal details, including job, position and function; b) Purpose of the trip (brief description of the activities and terms of participation in the event) and intended length of stay; c) Details of the organisers and person in charge in Brazil (full name, telephone, e-mail etc.); d) If applicable, declaration that all the applicant's travel expenses will be covered, during the entire stay in Brazil, by the event organisers. In case the invitation letter contains this information, the applicant will not have to present personal proof of sufficient financial means (item 5 above). Visitor Visa (VIVIS) - Journalistic coverage, news reporting or filming
Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of journalistic coverage, news reporting or filming.
With the exception of journalistic productions, in case of audiovisual shootings / recordings (i.e. advertising, marketing or commercial pieces, as well as the making of documentaries), foreign crews must obtain prior authorisation issued by the Brazilian National Agency of Cinema – ANCINE – in partnership with a Brazilian co-producer.

If activities will be conducted in indigenous lands or in environmental protection areas, producers must obtain prior authorisation from the competent bodies.
Please note: rather than a Visitor Visa, a Temporary Visa (VITEM V based on Normative Resolution No. 17) applies to news correspondents from newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcasters, or press agencies.
Entry of equipment: in case it is necessary to take photographic and/or filming equipment into Brazil, it is recommended that crews obtain an "ATA Carnet" to be presented to customs authorities. This is an international customs document, accepted in Brazil, which permits tax-free and duty-free temporary export and import of goods for up to one year. Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purpose of international adoption of Brazilian children.

Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of study (e.g., primary / secondary levels of education, undergraduate / postgraduate degrees, technical and language courses, study / research exchange programs) or supervised academic internship.
Please note: the duration of the activities (start and end dates) must be informed in the letter provided by the Brazilian institution to which the applicant will be linked. If the activity is due to last more than 90 days, a Temporary Visa (VITEM IV - Study or VITEM IV - Internship) must be requested.

One of the following documents must be presented, depending on the intended activity: a) Study: acceptance letter from the Brazilian education or research institution to which the applicant will be linked. The letter must be printed on official letterhead of the institution and contain the following information: Declaration that the applicant is duly enrolled in a course or has been accepted to the intended course / research project; Course / research description, duration, period (include start and end dates of the activities); Declaration confirming that the course has been fully paid (if it is not free of charge) or that the student has been awarded a scholarship / bursary / maintenance grant; The education institution's Corporate Taxpayer Identification Number ("Cadastro Nacional de Pessoas Jurídicas" – CNPJ); Details of the person in charge of admissions in Brazil (full name, telephone, e-mail etc.). b) Supervised academic internship: signed agreement / contract between the intern and the Brazilian institution offering the placement. The document must be printed on official letterhead of the institution and contain the following information: Confirmation that the activities to be undertaken by the intern are compatible with his/her field of studies; Description of the work to be developed during the internship, duration, period (include start and end dates of the activities); Details of the person in charge of supervising the internship in Brazil (full name, telephone, e-mail etc.). Please note: the signatures on the letters must be certified by a notary ("tabelião"). The signature authentication will not be necessary if the document is issued by a public-funded (Federal or State) university. |
Visitor Visa (VIVIS) – Academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes, visiting professors
Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes, and teaching. It is intended for researchers, scientists, and visiting professors, with no employment relationship with the Brazilian institution.
Please note: the duration of the activities (start and end dates) must be informed in the letter provided by the Brazilian institution to which the applicant will be linked. If the activity is due to last more than 90 days, a Temporary Visa (VITEM I) must be requested. In case any of these activities are going to be performed under an employment agreement, regardless of the length of stay, a Temporary Visa (VITEM I based on Normative Resolution No. 24) must be obtained.

Letter from the Brazilian education or research institution to which the applicant will be linked. The letter must be printed on official letterhead of the institution and contain the following information: The applicant's full personal details, including job, position and function; Description of the activities, duration, period (include start and end dates of the activities); Details of the institution and person in charge in Brazil (full name, telephone, e-mail etc.); Details of the conditions of the applicant’s stay and the agreement made between the parts (e.g. inter-institutional agreement, international agreement, protocols of cooperation / intent etc.); Declaration confirming that the activities will not be funded by a Brazilian source, except if the applicant has been awarded a Brazilian scholarship / bursary / maintenance grant (in this case, include details); Declaration confirming that there is no employment relationship between the parts. Please note: the signatures on the document must be certified by a notary public ("tabelião"). The signature authentication will not be necessary if the document is issued by the Brazilian government or by a public-funded (Federal or State) university or research institution. |
Visitor Visa (VIVIS) – Artistic or sports activities
Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of engaging in artistic or sports activities such as taking part in artistic or sports competitions, undertaking sports training, participating in rehearsals, exhibitions, shows, artistic presentations, festivals, among other related activities. Technicians and other professionals supporting the artist or athlete are included in this category.
Please note: the former Artists and Sportspersons Visa (VITEM III) has been discontinued and substituted by: VIVIS, if the maximum stay does not exceed 90 days.

The invitation letter must be printed on company letterhead of the event organiser (e.g. employer, sports association, producers etc.) and contain the following information: a) The applicant's full personal details, including job, position and function; b) Purpose of the trip (brief description of the activities, including venues and dates in which they will take place) and intended length of stay; c) Details of the organisers and person in charge in Brazil (full name, telephone, e-mail etc.); d) Remuneration the applicant will receive. In case there is no remuneration, declaration that all the applicant's travel expenses will be covered, during the entire stay in Brazil, by the organisers. Please note: The signature on the invitation letter must be certified by a notary ("tabelião"). It is the organisers' responsibility to arrange with the Ministry of Labour and other competent authorities all the appropriate authorisations for the event or activity to take place. |

Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purpose of carrying out volunteer services with non-profit entities or organisations.

Visitor Visa (VIVIS) – Health treatment
Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purpose of health treatment.
Please note: applies to short-lasting medical or therapeutic treatments (specified in the medical referral letter), entirely funded by the applicant. If the treatment is due to last more than 90 days, a Temporary Visa (VITEM II) must be requested.

A detailed cost estimate (medical quote) must be presented, in addition to at least one of the following documents: Health insurance, valid in Brazil, which provides coverage for the specified treatment; or Certificate of health services provision laid down by international agreement or any other means of reimbursement, should the treatment be provided by the Brazilian Unified Health System - SUS (e.g. social security agreements); or Sufficient private means to cover all treatment expenses (see item 5 above for accepted documents). |

Visitor Visa (VIVIS) – Vessel or aircraft crew members, maritime workers
Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of working aboard cruise ships operating along the Brazilian coast or as aircrew members, as well as conducting maritime worker activities aboard foreign-flagged vessels or platforms operating in Brazilian jurisdictional waters.

Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, for the purpose of family reunion on the grounds of marriage that has been celebrated by power of attorney in Brazil.

5) HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION THROUGH E-CONSULAR

Read these instructions carefully before requesting this service. Have all required documents ready.
It will be necessary to scan the original copies of the requested documents. Damaged or very old documents whose authenticity cannot be confirmed may be refused at the discretion of the Consulate.
After completing and electronically submitting the form below, the application will be checked by the Consulate. After that, adjustments may be requested. WAIT FOR E-MAIL AUTHORIZATION BEFORE SUBMITTING THE DOCUMENTS.
6) HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR HARD-COPY DOCUMENTS, AFTER CLEARANCE FROM E-CONSULAR
After receiving an email with the Consulate's validation message of your request, you can present the documents in two ways, at your convenience:
- by post: you must send everything by XpressPost envelope (Canada Post) or other service, with tracking number (FEDEX, PUROLATOR, DHL, etc.)
or
- You can drop off a regular envelope with your documents (sealed, with your full name, address, telephone and email) in the Consulate's Dropbox, which is to the right of the entrance door.
7) HOW TO RECEIVE YOUR DOCUMENTS BACK AFTER PROCESSED
By post: in order to receive your documents, after they have been processed, by post, a return XpressPost envelope, or a corresponding one with a tracking number, must be included in your application.

Please note:
1) No rush services are offered. No expediting fees are charged by this Consulate.
2) Fees are non-refundable. Please be very careful upon submitting your visa application. Incorrect, incomplete and withdrawn applications will be charged regardless of the visa being granted or not.
3) The payment of the visa fee will not be reimbursed should the visa be denied; whether it be for lack of documentation on behalf of the applicant or any other relevant reason that may prevent the visa from being granted during the application analysis process. (The fee refers not to the visa itself, but rather to the analysis and processing of the application).
