Press Release #96
Visitor visas for citizens of Australia, Canada, the United States and Japan
The Brazilian government has decided to resume the requirement for visitor visas for citizens of Australia, Canada, the United States and Japan. The decision was made after consulting these four countries about the possibility of granting visa exemptions to Brazilian nationals, in respect for the principle of reciprocity. The measure will be in force as of October 1, 2023.
The exemption was established by Decree 9.731, of March 16, 2019, in a break with the pattern of Brazilian migration policy, historically based on the principles of reciprocity and equal treatment.
Brazil does not grant unilateral exemption of visitor visas, without reciprocity, to other countries.
As of the date the measure goes into effect, the electronic visa modality, which was in effect before the unilateral exemption, will be adopted.
In the interests of Brazilian citizens, the Brazilian government will be ready to continue negotiating visa exemption agreements on a reciprocal basis with the four countries mentioned above.
