Reciprocal visa waiver between Brazil and Japan
The governments of Brazil and Japan have reached an understanding for the reciprocal exemption of visitor visas for bearers of common passports traveling for up to 90 days. The exemption will be initially valid for three years, and will apply from September 30, 2023. With the measure, Brazilian and Japanese tourists will be able to visit Japan and Brazil without the need to obtain visas.
The understanding stems from Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's announcement, on the occasion of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's visit to Japan last May, to extend the exemption of visitor visas to Brazilian citizens. This has allowed the Brazilian government to adopt the same measure for Japanese citizens, in line with the pattern of Brazilian migration policy, based on the principles of reciprocity and equal treatment between countries.
The announced waiver will contribute to the deepening of people to people ties between the two countries in the year of the 115th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil.
