Visitor visas for citizens of Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States
The Brazilian Government has decided to resume the requirement of visitor visas for citizens of Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States. The decision followed consultations with these four countries on the possibility of granting visa exemption to Brazilian nationals, in compliance with the principle of reciprocity. The measure will take effect from 1st October 2023.
The visa exemption was established by Decree 9,731 of March 16, 2019, in breach of the pattern of Brazil's migration policy, historically based on the principles of reciprocity and equal treatment.
Brazil does not grant unilateral visitor visa exemption to other countries without reciprocity.
From the date of entry into force of the measure, the Brazilian Government will adopt the electronic visa modality, which was in force before the unilateral exemption.
In view of the interests of Brazilian citizens, the Brazilian Government will be ready to continue negotiating visa exemption agreements on mutual bases with the four mentioned countries.
