CPF
Important information
Registering for the Individual Taxpayer Registry (Cadastro de Pessoa Física, or CPF) is mandatory for foreign nationals who own or would like to own, in Brazil, certain assets that require public registration, such as real estate, motorised vehicles, aircraft, vessels, bank accounts, stock shares or capital market investments.
The CPF number is issued only once (unique and definitive), and it is not possible to register twice. The CPF number will be generated upon registration and recorded on the receipt provided to the applicant. The number must be kept in a safe place or memorized, as "CPF cards" are no longer issued.
Due to tax privacy regulations, those who have lost/forgotten their CPF number must retrieve it directly at one of the units of the Federal Revenue (Receita Federal) in Brazil. If necessary, the request can be done by proxy by a representative of the person concerned. Further clarifications can be obtained by e-mail: cpf.residente.exterior@receita.fazenda.gov.br
If you already have a CPF number, you may verify its status directly at the Federal Revenue website.

You can request CPF-related services, such as updates, amendments of personal information, and cancellations, via the following email: cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br
At the bottom of the page, please choose the option to sign in with an e-mail and password ("Se você não tem CPF, clique aqui para entrar com e-mail e senha.")
3. Processing times and cost
Registrations submitted in person are issued on the same day of the appointment.
All others are subject to Federal Revenue processing time.
CPF services are free of charge.
4. Anual re-registration
Starting January 2025, all CPF numbers issued for non-Brazilian must be re-registered. This procedure will need to be repeated annually by foreign CPF holders with addresses abroad.
To perform the registration update procedure, the foreigner must download or update the Federal Revenue app, available for Android and iOS platforms, and:
a) provide their CPF registration number and date of birth;
b) capture, via the RFB app, the photograph of the CPF holder’s face and passport; and
c) fill in the requested registration information in the app.
*If there is any discrepancy in the CPF data during the procedure via the app, it will not be possible to complete the re-registration. In this situation, the applicant must email consular.sydney@itamaraty.gov.br to book an appointment. The error message generated by the app must be presented, along with one of the following documents:
a) Passport;
b) National Migration Registration Card (CRNM) or the old Foreign Identity Card (CIE/RNE).
