VITEM I – Research, Teaching or Academic Extension

(More than 90 days)

- Original passport (signed, valid up to the end of Brazil trip, with at least 2 visa blank pages)

- Proof of residence in the U.S. (copy of visa or Green Card) for non-U.S. citizens

- Proof of residence in consular jurisdiction (copy of a valid driver's license or utility bill will be accepted as proof of residence)

- Passport-style photo (2”x 2”, white background)

- USPS money order - see visa fees here     (*Fulbright Program participants are exempt from this requirement)

- Birth Certificate (original and one copy)

- FBI Background Check (issued within the past 60 days)    (*Fulbright Program participants are exempt from this requirement)

- Extra USPS Priority Express envelope, pre-paid and self-addressed (this will be used to mail your passport back to you)

FULBRIGHT applicants only: Grant authorization letter from Fulbright Commission

The requirements listed above are not all-inclusive.  Additional documents may be requested at the discretion of the Consular Authority.

 
Mail your application and documents to:

VITEM I applicants that will be receiving payment from a Brazilian source require prior authorization of applicant’s temporary residence in Brazil from the Brazilian Ministry of Labor. Only after approval by the Ministry of Labor may the applicant submit his or her VITEM I application to the Consulate.

 
Additional requirements for applicants not receiving payment from Brazilian source:

❖ Letter from Brazilian academic or research institution, explaining applicant’s research activities in Brazil.
❖ Copy of the Diário Oficial da União in which the applicant’s authorization from the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações (MCTIC) is published.
❖ Termo de Compromisso signed by applicant. Access document here.
