Vital Certificates
The Consulate General of Brazil issues vital certificates of Births, Marriages and Deaths occurred in Canada.
ALL SERVICES MUST BE REQUESTED THROUGH THE E-CONSULAR PLATFORM.
To produce legal effects in Brazil, the certificate issued by this Consulate General has to be registered at the "Cartório do 1° Ofício de Registro Civil" (main civil registry office) of the city where the applicant has a legal domicile in Brazil or in Brasilia-DF, in case the applicant does not have a legal residence in Brazil.

- The Consulate General of Brazil in Montreal issues birth certificates for children born in any province in Canada.
- Registering a child at 12 years of age or older:
- Two witnesses are mandatory for children registered at 12 years of age or older. The witnesses can be relatives (including the parents) and do not have to be Brazilian citizens. The witnesses must provide a photocopy of an ID document (valid passports are preferable).
- Registering an adult at 18 years of age or older:
- The applicant must be the person in the matter and he/she must sign the application.
REQUIREMENTS:
- A complete and signed application form.
- Original official birth certificate issued by the Directeur de l'état civil du Québec. The birth certificate submitted must contain both parent's name in full. Short or abbreviated versions of this document will not be accepted.
- Original of the Brazilian Identity card of the Brazilian parent / his/her Brazilian birth certificate.
- Original of a valid passport from both parents.
- Original of the foreign parent's birth certificate with his/her parent's name in full. Short or abbreviated versions of this document will not be accepted.
- Original of the Brazilian marriage certificate, when applicable. (Note: mandatory upon change of name due to marriage).
RE-ISSUANCE OF A BIRTH CERTIFICATE:
A duplicate of the birth certificate can be requested for children registered at this Consulate General only. For any other case, the applicant must request it to the Brazilian office abroad that has issued the original document.
FEES AND FORM OF PAYMENT:
- The Birth Certificate is free.
2. MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE
- Please make sure your application is complete.
- The name the wife will adopt after the marriage must be informed upon application. According the Brazilian legislation, first names cannot be excluded.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Marriage Registration Form, at the e-consular platform, signed by the Brazilian applicant;
- Original of the official marriage certificate issued by Directeur de l'état civil du Québec;
- Original of the Brazilian Identity Card;
- Original birth certificate of the Brazilian spouse with less than 6 months of issuance;
- Original of his/her valid Brazilian passport;
- Statement from the foreign spouse certifying that he/she has never been previously married to a Brazilian citizen;
- Original of the foreign spouse's birth certificate containing his/her parents name. Abbreviated birth certificates will not be accepted.
- Original of the Divorce Certificate, when applicable:
- If the divorce has taken place in Brazil, he/she must present the Brazilian judicial divorce decision.
- If the divorce has taken place abroad, he/she must present the foreign judicial divorce decision, recognized by the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice (Superior Tribunal de Justiça).
GETTING MARRIED IN BRAZIL:
In order to get married in Brazil, please contact a Civil Registry office in the city you are planning to get married. The Civil Registry office will be able to correctly inform you about required documents, as it might differ from city to city.
Please note that most documents required must be legalized at the Consulate before being sent to Brazil.
The Consulate General of Brazil does not offer translation services.
RE-ISSUANCE OF THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE:
A duplicate of marriage certificates can only be requested for marriages registered at this Consulate General.
- The foreign judicial decision of divorce resulting from a marriage between Brazilian citizens or between a Brazilian citizen and a foreign national must be registered in Brazil at the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice ("Superior Tribunal da Justiça"), even if the marriage certificate has never been registered in Brazil. Only after that a new marriage certificate can be issued.
- In order obtain the legal ratification (homologação), the following procedure applies:
- The applicant needs a lawyer in Brazil to forward the request to the Brazilian Court of Justice. The request must include:
- A power of attorney for the lawyer.
- The foreign judicial divorce certificate, legalized by the Consulate in Montreal.
- The original marriage certificate, legalized by the Consulate in Montreal, in case the marriage has not been registered in any consular office or civil registry in Brazil.
- If possible, a statement of agreement signed by the former spouse and notarized by a notary public.
- The applicant needs a lawyer in Brazil to forward the request to the Brazilian Court of Justice. The request must include:
- A power of attorney for the lawyer.
- The foreign judicial divorce certificate, legalized by the Consulate in Montreal.
- The original marriage certificate, legalized by the Consulate in Montreal, in case the marriage has not been registered in any consular office or civil registry in Brazil.
- If possible, a statement of agreement signed by the former spouse and notarized by a notary public.
Any foreign document that is not written in Portuguese must be translated by a certified translator in Brazil.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Original official death certificate issued by the Canadian Registrar General.
- Death Certificate form (at e-consular platform) dully filled up and signed.
- Original cremation certificate, if applicable.
- Original medical statement indicating the causa mortis.
- Original passport from the deceased, for cancellation.
- Original valid identification document of the applicant.
RE-ISSUANCE OF THE DEATH CERTIFICATE:
A duplicate only be requested if the original certificate was issued by this Consulate and if it has not yet been registered at the Civil Registry Office in Brazil.
