CPF - Information for foreigners
You must submit all documents to the Consulate-General of Brazil in Miami through the e-Consular system.
General Information
Foreign citizens who, in Brazil, own or wish to own assets and rights subject to public registration, including properties, vehicles, vessels, aircraft, corporate interests, bank accounts or applications in the financial market must be registeredd in the Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas - Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF).
The CPF number is assigned only once, with no possibility of second registration. The CPF number will be generated at the time of issuance and will appear on the receipt that will be given to the applicant. The number must be kept in a safe place or it must be memorized.
Anyone who has forgotten their CPF number should request it in Brazil, from a Receita Federal (RFB) unit, as due to tax secrecy, this problem cannot be resolved in the Consulate-General of Brazil in Miami. If necessary, the request may be made by a representative of the interested party in Brazil, by power of attorney. Foreigners must draw up a power of attorney at a local public notary, apostille the document and then translate it into Portuguese with a sworn public translator.
As set out in Joint COCAD/COGEA Ordinance No. 53/2023, foreigners who are abroad must present their CPF requests to Brazilian consular offices abroad, through in-person service.
The service is free.
Mandatory Requirements
- Valid Passport
- Birth Certificate
All documents must be submitted through the e-Consular system, choosing the service "CPF - inscrição para MAIOR de idade/Foreigners".

Mandatory Re-registration
Starting January 13, 2025, all foreign CPFs must be re-registered. The procedure must be repeated annually by foreign CPF holders with an address abroad. All updating services must be performed through the Federal Revenue Service app, available for Android and iOS platforms.
To perform the registration update procedure, the foreigner must download or update the Federal Revenue Service app and:
a) enter their CPF registration number and date of birth;
b) capture, via the RFB app, a photo of the CPF holder's face and passport; and
c) fill in the registration information requested by the app.
If there is a discrepancy in the CPF data during the app procedure, it will not be possible to re-register. In this case, the applicant may send a message to atendimento.miami@itamaraty.gov.br with a print screen of the error screen, so that a possible solution can be verified.
