CPF for non-Brazilian citizens
Please note: The information below is meant for non-Brazilian citizens.
The CPF is the equivalent of the USA Social Security number.
It is advisable that non-Brazilian citizens who intend to live, study or work in Brazil, have or will have business in Brazil or are married to a Brazilian citizen obtain a CPF number, which is required for several situations in Brazil, such as opening a bank account, making financial operations, buying/selling of properties and other legal matters.
How to request a CPF number
- Fill out the online form: https://servicos.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Servicos/CPF/cpfEstrangeiro/Fcpf.asp
Non-Brazilian citizens must not fill out the field "Título de Eleitor" (“Voter”).
The browser pop-up blocker must be disabled. Otherwise, you will not be able to send the request. - After clicking the button “Enviar” (Submit), the website will generate a protocol (FCPF) with a code. Save it as a PDF document, then print it and sign it in the presence of a notary public.
- Fill out the Consulate electronic service request form on the e-consular system (choose the service “CPF – estrangeiros”):
https://ec-losangeles.itamaraty.gov.br/
On the form, upload:
- a photo ID containing the full name, date of birth and nationality (e.g.: passport or driver’s license);
- birth certificate or marriage certificate. If married to a Brazilian citizen, the Brazilian marriage certificate must be uploaded.
* Make sure to click the button “Enviar” (Submit) at the end.
* After reviewing and approving the form, the Consulate will send instructions for making an appointment on a scheduled day and time.
