Transcription
a) Transcription is the registration, at a 1st Civil Registry Office in Brazil, of a foreign certificate (birth, marriage and death), previously registered abroad by a Brazilian Consulate.
b) As it allows the act entered abroad to produce legal effects in national territory, it is recommended that the transcription be done upon arrival in Brazil.
c) Before being transcribed at a Brazilian registry office, all foreign documents, previously registered at a Consulate, must be translated. Documents issued directly by a Brazilian Consulate do not need to be translated.
d) The 1st Civil Registry Office must be the one where the individual is domiciled or, in the absence of a defined domicile, the 1st Civil Registry Office of the Federal District.
e) The transcription allows the individual to obtain a definitive registration, necessary for the issue of Brazilian documents and other aspects of civilian life in Brazil.
f) It is advisable to contact the Brazilian registry office where one intends to carry out the registration, so as to obtain any necessary information beforehand. Please click here to check the addresses and details of Brazilian registry offices ("serventias extrajudiciais").
g) Please click here to access the National Justice Council's (CNJ) regulations regarding transcription.
