General information
- Your child will officially be granted Brazilian nationality upon consular birth registration, being considered Brazilian by birth (read more).
- Without the consular birth registration or a birth certificate issued by a notary public in Brazil, it is not possible to obtain other Brazilian documents such as a passport. In order to obtain these documents in national territory, the law determines that the consular registration be transcribed in Brazil.
- The birth cannot be registered if it has been previously registered at the Consulate General in London, at another Brazilian consulate abroad, or at a registry office in Brazil. Re-registration and/or knowingly providing false information upon birth registration imply crime of fraudulent misrepresentation (Brazilian Criminal Code, article 299).
- If the parents were married in the United Kingdom or any other country, it is advisable to register the marriage at the Consulate first, and subsequently proceed with the child's consular birth registration, especially if there have been name alterations after marriage (learn more about consular marriage registration).
- The consular birth certificate will be based on the British Certified Copy of an Entry of Birth, which is the document attesting the birth and the parents' names. The Certified Copy of an Entry (full form), containing the parents' names, must be presented at the Consulate. The British Birth Certificate (short form), handed to the parent(s) upon registration, is not sufficient for the Brazilian consular birth registration to be drawn up, as it does not display the parents' names. In case you do not hold the Certified Copy of an Entry (full form), you must first have it issued by the Register Office where the entry was recorded.
- For entries registered over 6 months ago, in England or in Wales, the he Certified Copy of an Entry must be requested via the General Register Office website.
