Individual taxpayer registry - CPF
GENERAL INFORMATION
Law No. 14.534/23 makes the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) the single number for personal identification in Brazil's public service databases. The law came into force on January 11, 2023 and set a deadline of 12 months (January 11, 2024) for agencies and entities to adapt their systems and procedures for serving citizens, in order to adopt the CPF registration number as their identification number.
With the new law, therefore, the CPF will be the only identification number required of citizens to provide public services.
In addition, citizens, Brazilians or foreigners, of any age, who own or wish to own, in Brazil, assets and rights subject to public registration, including real estate, vehicles, boats, aircraft, shareholdings, bank accounts or investments in the financial market, must register with the CPF.
The CPF number is assigned only once (unique and definitive), without the possibility of a second registration. The CPF number will be generated at the time of issue and will appear on the receipt given to the applicant. The number should be kept in a safe place, as a "CPF card" will no longer be issued.
If you have forgotten your CPF number, you will have to apply for it in Brazil at the Federal Revenue Office, as this problem cannot be solved at the Consulate due to tax secrecy. If necessary, the request can be made by a representative of the person concerned in Brazil, by power of attorney. Further information can be obtained by e-mail: cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br.
The service is free of charge.
