What we can do for you
The functions of a consular office include:
- Protecting and providing assistance to Brazilian citizens in its jurisdiction, respecting the international treaties in force and the legislation of the foreign country;
- Issuing passports and other travel documents;
- Acting as a notary and civil registry officer, registering births, marriages and deaths, issuing powers of attorney, certificates and other notarial acts;
- Carry out consular registration;
- Carry out certain acts of military service;
- Allow citizens to exercise their right to vote in presidential elections and other services that the electoral legislation determines;
- Forwarding processes for the loss and reacquisition of Brazilian nationality;
- Grant small amounts of financial aid to Brazilians who are proven to be destitute abroad;
- Defend Brazilian nationals from discrimination and ensure that their human rights are guaranteed;
- Check the possibility of offering legal advice to nationals;
- Visit detained Brazilians;
- Omit to notify local authorities of any irregularities in the migratory status of Brazilian citizens
- Preparing contingency plans for any natural disasters or socio-political tensions.
What we cannot do for you
Consulates and Embassies cannot do the following:
- Issue any document that does not comply with Brazilian or local legislation;
- Issue Identity Cards (authorization of the Secretariats of Public Security), National Foreigner Registration (Federal Police), National Driver's Licenses (DETRAN or DENATRAM), criminal record (Federal Police or Secretariats of Public Security);
- To be a legal party or agent in legal proceedings involving Brazilian citizens;
- Exempt Brazilian citizens from the immigration legislation of other countries;
- Support Brazilians in residence permit applications in Turkey;
- Intervene in visa application processes at Embassies or Consulates in other countries;
- Assume responsibility for contracts, debts or expenses of any nature of Brazilians abroad;
- Intervene in private law matters, such as consumer rights or family matters;
- Expediting legal proceedings for Brazilians abroad;
- Intervene in cases where they are prevented from entering other countries;
- Translate documents or act as an interpreter;
- Re-booking flights or retrieving lost luggage;
- Paying medical or legal expenses of Brazilians abroad;
- Granting loans to Brazilians;
- Investigate crimes or disappearances on our own;
- Offer free shelter or accommodation at the location of the office, except in the case of a proven disaster;
- Provide food, except in cases of proven necessity;
- Organize the travel of Brazilian citizens to other countries;
- Intervene in the release of detained Brazilian nationals;
- Acting contrary to local legislation or judicial decisions (Brazilian or foreign);
- Facilitating the international abduction of minors, even in favor of a Brazilian parent;
- Disclose unauthorized information about the whereabouts of an adult Brazilian without his or her express consent, or of a minor or disabled Brazilian without the consent of his or her legal guardians.
