Important information
- The purpose of the trip and the intended length of stay determine which visa will be required under Brazilian immigration law. There are two main types of visas: Visitor Visas (VIVIS) and Temporary Visas (VITEM).
- As shown in the table of contents below, a VIVIS applies to a range of travel purposes for maximum stays of up to 90 days. For some of these purposes, if the intended stay exceeds 90 days, a VITEM must be requested. Temporary visas are broken down into sub-categories (VITEM I to VITEM XIII), according to specific travel purposes and lengths of stay.
- VITEM holders must register with the Federal Police within 90 days from first entry. Upon registration, the individual will have to present a document containing both parents’ full names (e.g. full birth certificate), which must be duly legalised / apostilled by the competent authority in the issuing country and subsequently translated into Portuguese by a sworn translator (tradutor juramentado) in Brazil. British documents are legalised by the FCO - Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
- Passports must be valid for the entire period the individual intends to remain in Brazil. No minimum passport validity is required.
- Visa applicants must meet all requirements to receive the category of visa for which they are applying. The consulate may request additional information or documentation, as deemed necessary.
- Select a visa category from the chart below to learn more. After reading the instructions, if you have any queries, please send an e-mail to visa.edinburgh@itamaraty.gov.br
- The Consulate General in Edinburgh does not have any association, partnership, or agreement with third parties who act as representatives in requesting consular services. All the services provided by the Consulate General can be requested without contracting an agent or indicating a representative. Even if a third party is duly authorised to act as a representative for consular services, the Consulate General does not provide any differentiated treatment in these cases, ensuring equality of service for all applicants. In any case, before dealing with a request on your behalf by a representative or an agent, the Consulate General will ask for a proof that you have given the agent or your representative the authority to act on your behalf, such as a letter of authorisation.
