With the support of the Consulate General of Brazil in Cape Town and the Ministry of Tourism of Brazil, Lee Middleton, an American travel journalist based in South Africa, has recently visited several interesting places in Brazil.
The journalist was in Brazil between December 2023 and January 2024. Among other places, she visited Pantanal, the Amazon, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and Ilha Grande. During her stay in Rio de Janeiro, Middleton received support from the Ministry of Tourism to carry out her program, which included a rehearsal at the Salgueiro samba school and New Year's Eve in Copacabana.
In an article published on 25/2 in the "Sunday Times", the Sunday newspaper with the largest circulation in South Africa, she told a little bit about her experience in Bonito, in Pantanal, and other tourist destinations in the country. The journalist also continues to negotiate with other media outlets to publish specific articles about some of the places she visited. The articles will contribute to increase the interest of South African tourists in Brazil.
In fact, there was an increase in the bilateral flow of tourists between the two countries last year, compared to the numbers recorded in 2022. There were around 46.000 passengers in both directions between January and November, an increase of 119% compared to the previous year. The entry of 8,570 South African tourists into the national territory was recorded in 2023. Even though this amount means a significant increase compared to 2022 (5,432 tourists), there would still be a lot of room for growth, if we take into account the figures observed in 2019, before the interruption of direct routes between the two countries: that year, 21,423 South African visitors went to Brazil.
And now, with the resumption of direct flights from South Africa to Brazil, it is easier to travel between the two countries. Currently, there are seven flights per week connecting the two countries. There are two flights a week between Cape Town and São Paulo, and five between Johannesburg and São Paulo.
As Lee Middleton accurately said in her article: with direct flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg, what are you waiting for to visit Brazil?
And please note that South African nationals do not need visas to visit Brazil.
