- A new passport may be requested at any time. There is no need to wait for the current passport to expire.
- It is recommended that Brazilian nationals enter and leave the country with a Brazilian passport.
- It is the citizen's responsibility to check if their passport is valid. The validity of a passport is never extended.
How to apply
1. Fill out the online passport application form (RER - Recibo de Entrega de Requerimento): https://formulario-mre.serpro.gov.br
2. With the required documents in hand, submit the application for the service via the e-consular platform: https://ec-capetown.itamaraty.gov.br
Processing time
Up to 7 working days from receipt of documentation at the Consulate.

2. | One document photo | The picture must be recent, from the last 6 months, in color and taken against an off-white plain background. The applicant’s face must be centred in the frame and looking straight at the camera with no tilt. The facial expression must be neutral and the face must be clearly shown. |
3. | Current passport, if applicable | If the previous passport has been lost, stolen or damaged, a Police Report will be required. |
4. | Brazilian birth certificate | If the child was born abroad and has not been registered at the Consulate yet, birth registration must be arranged before the passport application. |
5. | Consent for issuing a passport to minor | Both parents, Brazilian or foreigner, must complete the consent form (Formulário de Autorização para Emissão de Passaporte para Menor). Signature certifications can be done in person at the Consulate. Certifications of signatures by Commissioners of Oath, such as SAPS, will not be accepted. Inclusion of the travel authorisation is optional. |
