Passport application by mail
A passport application can be mailed to the Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago only for Brazilians residing within our jurisdiction (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin).
For mail-in applications, choose the desired service listed below:
- Passports for individuals 18 and over;
- Passports for minors under 18;
- Lost, stolen, or damaged Passports
Before mailing your application, go to the E-Consular platform and upload documents for consular review. Once the application is approved, the applicant can then mail in documents.
The envelope with the passport application must contain all original documents or copies certified by a Brazilian consulate or a Brazilian notary public (Cartório), as the case may be. The originals of the same documents previously uploaded to E-Consular and approved by the Consulate must be included. All documents will be returned in the prepaid envelope provided, along with the new passport.
Formulário de pedido de passaporte RER (The RER Passport Application Form) must bear the same signature as the original documents submitted with the application.
- ATTENTION! The Consulate in Chicago only accepts US Postal Service envelopes (FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc. envelopes are NOT accepted). We recommend an Express or Priority envelope with Tracking Number for your protection. The Consulate is not responsible for lost mail.
ATTENTION! When applying by mail, the applicant must buy two (2) envelopes: one to mail in the application addressed to the Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago 401 N. Michigan Ave suite 825, Chicago IL 60611; the other, a return envelope, for the Consulate return your original documents + the new passport (the return envelope must also be prepaid and self-addressed; please write your name and complete address with zip code).

PROCESSING TIMES
After documents are uploaded to E-Consular, the Consulate requires a period of five (5) business days to validate and enable the applicant to mail in all original documents + a return envelope. The passport is issued within ten (10) business days from the date that all required documents are received by the Consulate. Envelopes with incomplete or incorrect documentation will not be processed and will be returned in the return envelope provided by the applicant.

CONSULAR FEE
The only accepted payment method is Money Order issued by the United States Postal Service. Personal checks, credit/debit cards, or cash are not accepted. Failure to observe this requirement will result in processing time delay.
