Military Services
All military services, such as military enlistment, deferral, and certificate of exemption from draft, can only be requested in person at the Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago by prior appointment on the E-Consular platform. Under no circumstances will applications be accepted by mail

All Brazilian males are required to enlist in the Military, with the exception of the clergy.

Brazilian men residing abroad must remain in good Military standing between 18 and 45.

Brazilian men residing abroad must enlist until June 30th of the year in which they turn 18, at the nearest Brazilian Consulate. Enlisted men are bound to the Brazilian Army.

Brazilians living abroad for at least 3 months can request to be exempt from draft at the time of enlistment or afterwards.

The consular agent can enlist Brazilians over 18 up to the age limit of 45. After enlisting, the citizen receives a Certificate of Military Enlistment, commonly referred to as (CAM).

All military services offered by the Consulate are free of charge.
MILITARY ENLISTMENT - CAM
All Brazilian males have until June 30th of the year in which they turn 18 to enlist in the Military. Brazilians who have not enlisted by this time must make it right with the military service. This legal obligation applies even to those who live or were born abroad. Those who fail to comply will be subject to a fine and cannot obtain or renew their passport, among other negative ramifications.
IMPORTANT: All documents issued at Brazilian Consulates abroad now require the presentation of the CPF number for the document holder. Please have your CPF number with you when submitting a request through E-Consular.
To enlist in the Military, the applicant must appear in person at the Consulate after making an appointment through E-Consular, bearing the following documents:

Note: if the applicant does not have any Brazilian ID during the military enlistment, an American document with the same name as the Brazilian birth certificate will exceptionally be accepted. |

Once the applicant appears in person, after having scheduled an appointment through the E-Consular platform, the Consulate will issue a Certificate of Military Enlistment (CAM), valid for 1 (one) year. If he has all the necessary documents at the time of the appointment, he can request a Certificate of Exemption from Draft (CDI) at the time of enlistment (in tandem).
* My Brazilian birth certificate, issued after June 7, 1994, states that I have the option of choosing Brazilian citizenship after reaching 18. What should I do?
With the coming into force of Constitutional Amendment 54/2007, children of Brazilians born abroad who were registered at a Brazilian Consulate during the validity of EC nº 3/1994 became native Brazilians. Citizens who were registered in a Brazilian consular office between June 7, 1994, and September 20, 2007, and whose birth certificate includes the aforementioned notation, should request that the Consulate, where the registration was made, or the 1st Civil Registry Office, if the certificate has already been recorded (in Brazil), to issue a replacement copy of the document based on Article 12 of Resolution No. 155 of 16/07/2012 of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), and remove the information regarding the option for Brazilian nationality.
DEFERRAL - ANNUAL APPEARANCE
Citizens living abroad who have the Military Enlistment Certificate (CAM) but have not yet requested to be permanently discharged (Certificate of Exemption from Draft) must appear annually at the Consulate to request a new deferment. This must be done once a year until the discharge document is requested and processed by the appropriate authorities in Brazil.

To apply for the annual deferment, the applicant must appear in person at the Consulate after previously scheduling it on E-Consular, bearing the following documents:

CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION FROM DRAFT - CDI
A CDI (Certificate of Exemption from Draft) can be requested by any Brazilian who has enlisted as long as he has been residing abroad for more than 3 months. Once it has been granted, filing for the annual deferment is no longer necessary. There is no minimum age to request the CDI, which can also be requested in tandem with enlisting if the applicant has all the necessary documentation.

To apply for a CDI, the applicant must appear in person at the Consulate after making an appointment at the E-Consular bearing the following documents:

BE AWARE - Once the application is complete, the Consulate will forward it to the Brazilian Department of Defense, where it will be processed and the CDI will be electronically forwarded to the Consulate within eight to twelve months.
CDI DELIVERY
After 8 months from the submission (application) of the Certificate of Exemption from Draft, the interested party should contact notarial.chicago@itamaraty.gov.br to verify if the document has been processed by the Department of Defense in Brazil.
If the document has been digitally signed by the authorities, the Consulate can email you the document without the need to come to our office. The Consulate can also send the CDI along with the new passport when requested.
