General Guidelines
Nationals of Australia, Canada and the United States will need a visitor visa to travel to Brazil as of April 10th, 2025. If you are a citizen of these countries, you can request an electronic visa (e-Visa) and there is no need to come to the Consulate to have the document issued. The e-Visa request can be made on this website: https://brazil.vfsevisa.com. The fee will be US$ 80.90 and the visa will be valid for 10 years.
- If you require a visa, select the type of visa on the table of contents below, according to the purpose of your trip and intended length of stay.
- Read all the information carefully.
- Collect all necessary documentation.
- Fill out the online visa application form completely, print and sign the Visa Request Form Receipt – RER.
- Purchase the postal order(s) to pay the visa fee.
- Upload the required documents to the E-Consular platform.
- Once the documents are approved on the E-Consular platform, the original documentation can be sent by mail or delivered at the Consulate, after an appoinment is scheduled on the E-Consular platform. If mailed, a pre-paid return envelope, exclusively from the USPS, must be included. ATTENTION: it's necessary to present ONLY original versions of the documents that were validated, such as passports, whrere visas are stamped, birth or marriage certificates, green cards, notarized documents, Apostilles, and watermarked FBI criminal records, obtained, among other channelers, at Accurate Biometrics: 134 N La Salle St Ste 2060, Chicago, IL 60602 (https://accuratebiometrics.com/illinois/services/fbi-personal-background). The PDF received from the FBI is not accepted. If the original documents are not presented, the issuance of the visa will be held until these documents are mailed or another appointment is scheduled to bring them.
-
If the applicant is late to the appointment at the Consulate, it will also be necessary to schedule another time or mail the documents.
-
IMPORTANT: the visa is NOT issued on the same day documents are handed in. The applicant has to log in to his/her E-Consular account, choose the "Pick up issued visas" service on the list, and follow the instructions. After the visa is issued, the service will be validated and the applicant will be able to schedule an appointment to pick it up.
Attention: DO NOT send your service request by mail without receiving the e-mail with the validation of your request on E-Consular first. Requests sent without Consulate´s validation will be returned.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- The purpose of the trip and the intended length of stay determine which visa will be required under Brazilian immigration law. There are two main types of visas: Visitor Visas (VIVIS) and Temporary Visas (VITEM).
- As shown in the table of contents below, a VIVIS applies to a range of travel purposes for maximum stays of up to 90 days. For some of these purposes, if the intended stay exceeds 90 days, a VITEM must be requested. Temporary Visas are broken down into sub-categories (VITEM I to VITEM XIII) according to specific travel purposes and lengths of stay.
- VITEM holders must register with the Federal Police within 90 days from the first entry. Upon registration, the individual must present a document containing both parents’ full names (e.g., full birth certificate).
- Passports must be valid for the entire period the individual intends to remain in Brazil.
- Visa applicants must meet all requirements to receive the category of visa for which they are applying. The Consulate may request additional information or documentation as deemed necessary.
- Select a visa category from the chart below to learn more. After reading the instructions, if you have any queries, please send an e-mail to visa.chicago@itamaraty.gov.br.
-
The Consulate in Chicago ONLY accepts mail carried by the United States Postal Service (USPS). Mail carried by FEDX, UPS, DHL, etc is NOT accepted. For security reasons, we recommend the use of an Express Mail envelope. The Consulate is not responsible for postal delays.
