How to apply
GENERAL INFORMATION
1) All visa applications must be sent by mail (except for tourism/business visa for citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia). You do not need an appointment, as there is no face-to-face or walk-in service for visa requests.
2) Estimated processing times: 15 to 30 business days after the Consulate receives the application by mail (No expedited services are available).
3) Please read carefully all the information below before mailing your application.
4) A maximum of four visa applications will be accepted in the same envelope.
5) The Consulate-General of Brazil in Boston only accepts applications from residents of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Applications from residents of other states will be returned without processing.
6) WARNING: Please note that a visa is not an applicant’s right and may be denied. The visa does not guarantee the right of entry or stay in Brazil and it can be canceled at the discretion of the Brazilian immigration authorities.
GUIDELINES
STEP 1: Click here to check if you need a visa.
- Attention: You do not need a visa for transit in Brazil, that is, if you arrive in Brazil on a flight, remain in the international transit area, without passing through immigration control, and depart on another international flight from the same airport.
STEP 2: If you need a visa, click here to check the type of visa and the necessary documentation, according to the purpose of your trip and intended length of stay.
STEP 3: Collect all necessary documentation.
STEP 4: Click here to fill in the Brazilian visa application form.

- Please make sure to upload all the required documents.
STEP 5: Conclude the application form, print and sign the Visa Request Form Receipt – RER.
- Your signature on the receipt must be identical to the signature on your passport.
STEP 6: Purchase a USPS money order to pay the fee, according to your country of origin and the type of visa requested.

- Fees are non-refundable: incorrect, incomplete or withdrawn applications may be charged regardless of the visa being granted or not.
STEP 7: Send your application to the Consulate by mail (see more information below).
HOW TO SEND YOUR APPLICATION BY MAIL
The application must be sent using a prepaid USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope to the following address:

You must send:
- The documentation you collected in step 3, including your original passport;
- The Visa Request Form Receipt - RER you printed and signed in step 5;
- The USPS money order you purchased in step 6; and
- A pre-stamped self-addressed trackable return envelope from USPS.
