VITEM I - Research, Teaching or Academic Extension
ELIGIBILITY
Temporary Visa I (VITEM I) may be granted to visitors for a stay of over 90 days, for the following purposes:
1) Scientist, professor, researcher, or another professional with no employment contract with a Brazilian institution who will stay over 90 days in Brazil. If the applicant will stay less than 90 days, the appropriate visa will be a VIVIS.
A) Scientist or researcher who will conduct research awarded by scholarship, allowance, or research grant.
B) Scientist, researcher, or professional who will conduct research under an international cooperation agreement recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations.
C) Scientist, researcher, or professional who will participate in research projects established between foreign institutions or centers of research and development of foreign companies with Brazilian institution or company (incubator, scientific, technological and innovation institution, core of technological innovation, support foundation, educational institution, and public and private research). The project must be authorized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (“MCTI”) in Brazil. If the applicant will stay less than 90 days, the appropriate visa will be a VIVIS, although the project still needs authorization from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (“MCTI”) in Brazil.
D) Professor who will participate in academic extension or teaching with a scholarship granted by a Brazilian institution recognized by the Ministry of Education ("MEC") in Brazil.
E) Professor, researcher, or PhD student who will conduct research or teaching with a Fulbright grant.
2) Scientist, professor, researcher, or another professional with an employment contract with a Brazilian institution who will conduct research, teaching, or academic extension.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
- PASSPORT: Signed, valid up to the end of your trip, and with at least one visa blank page available (amendment pages are not accepted).
- BRAZILIAN VISA APPLICATION FORM: One per applicant, completely filled out online and signed by the passport holder or his/her parents/guardians. You will need to print only the receipt page with the bar code.
- PHOTO: One recent 2” x 2” passport-photo size, front view, white background.
- PROOF OF RESIDENCY in the jurisdiction of the Consulate (Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont).
- EVIDENCE OF INCOME: Proof of financial capability during the stay in Brazil (i.e., copy of bank/credit card statements or paychecks/paystubs).
- ITINERARY: Round-trip ticket, booked itinerary (reservation), or invitation letter from the host.
- INVITATION LETTER: Invitation letter from a Brazilian institution or company informing activities to be pursued by the applicant.
- BACKGROUND CHECK: FBI Clearance or local Police Department Clearance issued within the last six months.
- BIRTH CERTIFICATE: Copy of your birth certificate.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (IF APPLICABLE)

- ELIGIBILITY 1B:
- International cooperation agreement, memorandum of understanding, additional protocol or equivalent, in which the applicant is named;
- Proof of professional expertise stating the professional qualifications of the applicant.
- ELIGIBILITY 1C:
- Authorization ("Portaria") issued by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (“MCTI”) of Brazil, published in the Brazilian Official Gazette (“Diário Oficial da União");

- ELIGIBILITY 1E: Fulbright letter indicating the terms of the award.
- ELIGIBILITY 2: Authorization issued by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security ("MJSP") of Brazil.
- FOREIGN RESIDENTS: Evidence of legal stay in the U.S.
- MINORS:
- Visa Request Form Receipt – RER must be signed by both parents or legal guardians;
- Original or notarized copy or birth certificate;
- Copy of parents' passports; and
- Notarized authorization form signed by both parents / legal guardians. Click here to download the form.
