Transfer of human remains and ashes to Brazil

GENERAL INFORMATION
Most funeral homes in the jurisdiction of the Consulate are familiar with and able to follow all the necessary procedures for the transfer of human remains or ashes to Brazil.
By request of the family or friends of the deceased Brazilian national, the Department of Assistance of the Consulate can provide contact information of funeral homes in our jurisdiction that are able to follow the procedures for the transfer. To request this list or another emergency assistance, if necessary, please send an e-mail to assistencia.boston@itamaraty.gov.br
Attention: The Consulate does not have legal or budgetary provisions to provide any financial or logistical support for the transfer of human remains or ashes to Brazil.
The requisites for the transfer are the following:

In the case of transfer of human remains, Brazilian health authorities require the following documents to be apostilled (that is, certified by the Secretary of State):
- Official disposition, removal, or transportation permit;
- Original death certificate;
- Embalming certificate, duly notarized and apostilled; and
- Statement of non-contagious disease issued by the proper local authority, duly notarized and apostilled.
- In the case of transfer of ashes, Brazilian health authorities require the following documents to be apostilled (that is, certified by the Secretary of State):
- Certificate of cremation, duly signed by the crematory official before a notary public and apostilled; and
- Original death certificate.
- Attention: Brazilian authorities also require that the ashes be contained in a sealed and insulated urn.
