VITEM XI: Family Reunion

The VITEM XI visa may be granted to an individual (hereby referred to as “applicant”) who is the parent, guardian, grandparent, child, grandchild, spouse, partner, or sibling of a Brazilian citizen or of a temporary or permanent resident in Brazil (hereby referred to as “visa sponsor”).

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Passport (valid and signed with at least two blank Visa pages)
• Copy of proof of residence in the U.S. (visa or Green Card), for non-U.S. citizens
• Water, energy or gas bill in applicant's name
• Visa Application Form Receipt (printed and signed)                
• Passport photo (2’’x 2’’)
• U.S. Postal Service Money Order payable to the Consulate General of Brazil in Atlanta (see Visa Fees page). Visa fees are non-refundable.
  Dependents of Fulbright Program participants are exempt from this requirement
• Birth Certificate (copy) - if not born in the USA, Birth Certificate must be apostilled or legalized
  Birth certificate may also serve as proof of the relationship between applicant and visa sponsor (see below) if the former is the child of the latter.
• FBI Background Check (issued within the past 60 days)
  Dependents of Fulbright Program participants are exempt from this requirement
  Minors (younger than 18 years of age at time of application) are exempt from this requirement
• Travel itinerary showing entry in Brazil
• Proof of the relationship between applicant and visa sponsor (one of the following):
  -  Copy of Birth Certificate (if applicant is the child of the visa sponsor)
  - Copy of Marriage Certificate (if applicant is the spouse of the visa sponsor). If one of the spouses is Brazilian, the brazilian marriage certificate must be presented.
  - Documentation proving existence of a civil or stable union, if not legally married.
  If the documentation proving existence of a civil or stable union is not issued by a Court in Brazil nor by a US Court, applicant must enclose the following additional documents to his/her visa application:

1) Declaration signed by two witnesses, as proof of the stable union, certified by a Notary Public and apostilled; and
2) ONE of the following documents:
    a) proof of dependency issued by a tax authority or corresponding body of Federal Revenue Service; or
    b) religious marriage certificate; or
    c) testamentary provisions as proof of relationship; or
    d) life insurance policy in which one of the interested parties appears as the holder of the insurance policy and the other as a beneficiary; or
    e) deed of purchase and sale, registered with the Property Registry, showing the parties as owners or property lease agrément showing parties as  tenants; or
    f) joint bank account; or
    g) birth certificate of the couple's foreign child

• Documentation proving applicant’s legal guardianship of visa sponsor, or vice versa
• Documentation proving applicant’s financial dependence on visa sponsor, or vice versa
• Sworn affidavit stating that the applicant’s visa sponsor either currently resides or will reside in Brazil.
• Valid Brazilian passport or authorization of residence in Brazil (RNE) of the visa sponsor

► Additional documents may be requested at the discretion of the Consular Authority.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS

In addition to the visa application requirements stated above, applicants who are younger than 18 years of age at the time of application must present the following additional materials:

• Copy of birth certificate 
• Authorization for Issuance of Brazilian Visa for a Minor, signed by both parents. Signatures must be notarized.

If only one parent is listed on birth certificate, only that parent’s signature is required.If one parent has sole custody of applicant, a notarized copy of the court order awarding sole custody and exclusive parental rights must be presented.
If one parent is deceased, a death certificate must be presented.

• For children of Brazilian parent(s): Declaração de Não-Cidadania declaring that the applicant is not a Brazilian citizen, signed by Brazilian parent(s), if applicable.
• Copy of passports or other form of photo ID for both parents.

The name on the parent’s photo ID must match parent’s name on the child’s birth certificate. If said parent has changed his or her name since the issuance of the birth certificate, the parent must present documentation showing proof of the name change (e.g. marriage certificate or court order).

HOW TO APPLY

The documentation listed above may be submitted:

►  In person:

• Applicants may deliver the documentation in a closed/sealed envelope at the Consulate, Monday through Friday, between 1pm and 3pm. No documentation will be analyzed at the time of delivery.
• Applicants are responsible for checking visa status here. No e-mail will be sent to inform when the visa is ready for pick-up.
• Applicants may choose to pick up the visa in person at the Consulate, Monday through Friday, between 1pm and 3pm (no third parties allowed) or leave a self-addressed, pre-paid return envelope (Priority or Priority Express flat-rate only) from the U.S. Postal Service envelope.

Visas submitted by mail are the sole responsibility of the applicant. The Consulate is not responsible for any delays or loss by the postal service, nor will it track or provide information of the whereabouts of documentation sent.
