Republic of Liberia
Independent since 1847, Liberia was one of the first countries on the African continent to establish diplomatic relations with Brazil in the 19th century. The first bilateral agreement was signed in 1925 and, in the following years, trade contacts between the two countries were predominnat in the bilateral relationship. Brazil sent trade missions to that country in 1965, 1973 and 1977.
With the end of the civil war in Liberia (2003), the process of bilateral rapprochement intensified. The two countries signed a Technical Cooperation Framework Agreement in 2009 and six other bilateral agreements in 2010. In the context of the Ebola virus crisis, in 2014, the Brazilian government made a financial donation to the UN in addition to kits with medicines and medical supplies to fight the epidemic and assist the populations in Guinea-Conakry, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
The Embassy of Brazil in Monrovia was opened in 2011 and its functions were discontinued in 2019, when the Embassy of Brazil in Accra became cumulatively resposnible for overseeing relations with the Liberian government.
