Republic of Botswana
Brazil and Botswana established diplomatic relations in 1985. With the deepening of bilateral relations in the first decade of the 2000s, Brazil established its resident Embassy in Gaborone in 2007. The Embassy of Botswana in Brasília – the country's first one in Latin America – was opened in 2009.
In 2005, Brazil and Botswana signed a Bilateral Technical Cooperation Agreement, the legal framework for joint work programs. In 2022, they signed the Agreement on Visa Waiver for Nationals from Brazil and Botswana, with the aim to facilitate business travels and to increase tourism between the two countries.
Botswana is a member of the Southern African Customs Union - SAC. In 2009 MERCOSUR and SACU established a preferential trade agreement, an intermediate step towards the creation of a free trade area between the blocs. Botswana officially adopted the Japan-Brazil digital television system, becoming the first country in Southern Africa to do so.
