People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria
Brazil and Algeria established diplomatic relations in 1962, when the Embassy of Brazil in Algiers was established. The bilateral relationship received an important boost during the 1980s, when the Brazilian-Algerian Mixed Commission for Economic, Commercial, Scientific, Technological, Technical and Cultural Cooperation was created. In 1983, President João Figueiredo visited Algeria and in 1985 President Chadli Bendjedid visited Brazil. In 1987 the Minister of Industry and Commerce, José Hugo Castelo Branco, visited Algeria, where he signed an economic cooperation agreement. In the same year, the 1st Meeting of the Brazil-Algeria Bilateral Mixed Commission was held.
With the end of the Algerian crisis of the 1990s, a new cycle of rapprochement, cooperation, and increased trade flows began. The exchange of high-level bilateral visits was also intensified, with the signing of agricultural cooperation, trade, and maritime transport agreements. Since 2010 Brazil and Algeria have relied on a Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, designed to promote a comprehensive assessment of bilateral relations and exchange of views on regional themes and issues of global interest.
Algeria is one of the main partners of Brazilian technical cooperation in Africa, after the Portuguese-speaking African countries. In recent years, projects have been carried out in areas such as handicraft (gem cutting), health (pediatric heart surgery), agriculture and environment.
Algeria has positioned itself in recent years as one of Brazil's largest trading partners in Africa and the Arab world. Trade between Brazil and Algeria was $ 2.76 billion in 2019, with a $ 700.5 million deficit for Brazil.
