Republic of El Salvador
Brazil has maintained stable and amicable diplomatic relations with El Salvador since 1906. This relationship has strengthened over the past decade through high-level visits and increased technical cooperation, which has become the main theme of the bilateral relations. El Salvador is the main beneficiary country of Brazil’s cooperation in all Central America.
The visit of foreign minister Hugo Martínez to Brazil in October 2017 marked the resumption of bilateral relations and of the dialogue between Brazil and El Salvador. On that occasion, the two countries signed agreements for the creation of a bilateral political consultation mechanism, for the cooperation between diplomatic academies of the two countries and for the establishment of defense cooperation.
The 12th Meeting of the Brazil-El Salvador Technical Cooperation Working Group was held in San Salvador, on September 10-14, 2018, which launched new projects in the fields of agriculture, social protection/civil defense and biodiversity. Within the scope of trilateral technical cooperation, Brazil carries out public security actions in partnership with the Japanese government in favor of El Salvador.
Adding dynamism to trade and investment relations remains a priority theme of the bilateral agenda, in addition to coordinating hemispheric political themes. Mercosur submitted a proposal for a free trade area agreement to El Salvador in September 2020.
In 2019, trade between Brazil and El Salvador totaled $108.4 million. Brazilian exports amounted to $ 10.1 million while imports came to $ 7.3 million. Trade balance was favorable to Brazil with a surplus of $93.8 million.
