Diplomatic ties between Brazil and Oman were established in 1974. In 2008, Brazil opened a resident embassy in Muscat, the only Latin American diplomatic representation in the Omani capital. The Omani embassy in Brasília was opened in 2010, the only embassy of the Sultanate in Latin America.
Bilateral ties have intensified over the last 20 years. The first official visit by a Brazilian foreign minister to Oman took place in 2005. The political relationship was strengthened in 2013 with the creation of the bilateral Joint Commission and the Political Consultation mechanism, as well as the respective meetings held in 2016 and 2018.
In addition, high-level visits stand out, such as that of Vice President Michel Temer, in 2013, and the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, in September 2024, when he met with the Omani Foreign Minister, Badr Al Busaidi, and with the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Saud Al Habsi, with whom he discussed regional and bilateral issues, such as investments, agriculture, energy, defense and science and technology.
Bilateral trade has experienced substantial growth since 2000. In 2024, trade exchange reached $2 billion, with $1.2 billion in Brazilian exports and $805 million in imports, resulting in a surplus of $ 399 million for Brazil. The main products exported were iron ore (79%), poultry meat (15%) and petroleum residues (0.88%). Omani imports, in turn, were composed mainly of fertilizers (60%), fuel oils (35%) and other products from the manufacturing industry (2.8%).
The area of food security emerges as one of the main focuses of bilateral cooperation, with great potential for increasing trade and for the establishment of partnerships between Brazilian companies and local investors, both state-owned and private.
Oman is also the destination of the largest Brazilian investment in the Middle East: Vale's iron ore pelletizing plant in Sohar, installed in 2008. This project represents the largest foreign investment outside the hydrocarbons sector in the Sultanate, with an investment of over $3 billion.
