Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands is an archipelago located in the South Pacific, northeast of Australia, with about 690,000 inhabitants. The country is a parliamentary monarchy and a member of the Commonwealth, having the Queen of the United Kingdom as its head of State and the Prime Minister as the head of government.
A British protectorate since 1890, the Solomon Islands became politically emancipated in 1978.
The economy is based on service sectors, which employ a large part of the labor force and contribute about half of the country's GDP. Other important activities are agriculture, fishing, and forestry. The main export products are palm oil, copra (dried coconut pulp) and cocoa. The islands are rich in unexploited mineral resources such as lead, zinc, nickel and gold.
The country is a member of the 1982 Nauru Agreement, which aims to promote the coordination and harmonization of tuna fishery management in the eight member countries. The issue is of great relevance to Pacific island countries, which depend to a greater or lesser extent on revenues from fishing licenses for foreign vessels to fund the government. In the case of Solomon Islands, 9.8% of government revenues in 2016 came from such licenses.
Brazil established diplomatic relations with Solomon Islands on August 2, 2005. The bilateral rapprochement effort was initiated in the first half of 2005, when Ambassador Frederico Cézar de Araújo made Brazil's first official visit to the country.
The Ambassador of Brazil in Canberra is also accredited to Solomon Islands. No bilateral acts have yet been signed between Brazil and Solomon Islands.
Bilateral trade between Brazil and Solomon Islands totaled $129,000 in 2021. In this period, Brazil exported mainly cereal and fruit preparations and confectionery, and imported machinery and electrical equipment.
