Republic of Haiti
Brazil-Haiti relations are marked by technical cooperation and high-level political dialogue. In this respect, a highlight in the history of the bilateral relationship is the role Brazil played in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) between 2004 and 2017.
Though MINUSTAH was closed, Brazil renewed its commitment to the institutional development of Haiti and the improvement of the living conditions of the Haitian people through engagement in the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH).
Since 2010, when an earthquake that killed more than 100,000 people and caused damages representing 120% of Haiti's GDP struck the nation, the Caribbean country has become the recipient of significant support through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) projects. It is important to underline the cooperation in the health area through the construction of three reference hospitals, and in the area of professional training, through the construction of technical education centres. Projects in the areas of metrology, water resources, sanitation and prison system are being carried out.
It should also be mentioned that, since 2012, Brazil has adopted a special humanitarian migration policy for Haitians. The entry into force of the new Brazilian migration legislation and the publication of an interministerial ordinance, in April 2018, maintained the policy of humanitarian reception of Haitian citizens.
In 2018, bilateral trade totaled $47.67 million. Brazilian exports to Haiti amounted to $46.26 million (a 32% decreased compared to 2017), and imports totaled $ 1.41 million. Trade balance is favorablle to Brazil with a surplus of $ 44.85 million.
