Republic of Fiji
The Republic of Fiji an archipelago located in the South Pacific is a parliamentary republic and has a population of nearly 900,000 people.
From 1874 until its Independence in 1970, the Fiji islands were a British protectorate.
Fiji’s main economic sectors are agriculture (particularly sugar), fishery, forest products, and tourism.
Brazil established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Fiji in 2006. Bilateral rapprochement efforts began in 2005, when Ambassador Arnaldo Carrilho headed the first Brazilian official mission to that country. Since 2010, the Embassy of Brazil in Canberra is responsible for bilateral relations with Fiji.
In November 2013, Brazil and Fiji signed their first bilateral agreement, the Technical Cooperation Agreement. There is interest from Fiji in technical cooperation in sugar, ethanol and fishery. Fijian authorities have stressed that Brazil could be an important partner in the modernization of Fiji’s agriculture, by contributing to the development of sustainable agricultural industries to meet the demand of the domestic market and increase their exports.
In the field of humanitarian cooperation, Brazil has provided aid to Fiji in the aftermath of natural disasters. The most recent initiative, in 2021, was the donation of $75,000 to the Fijian government following the passage of tropical cyclone Yasa, in December 2020, which caused widespread damage in the country. Funds were donated through the United Nations World Food Programme to purchase mobile warehouses, satellite phones and portable communications terminals.
In 2014, the two countries agreed on the establishment of regular political consultations meetings.
In 2017, a Short-Stay Visa Waiver Agreement and a Visa Waiver Agreement for Nationals who hold a Diplomatic or Official Passport were signed and are currently in effect.
Brazil-Fiji bilateral trade is modest, ranging from 1$ million to $2 million over the past decade. It consists almost entirely of Brazilian exports.
