Republic of Azerbaijan
Brazil and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations in October 1993. Bilateral contacts intensified with the reciprocal opening of resident Embassies. The Embassy of Brazil in Baku was established in May 2009 and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Brasilia was opened in 2012.
In 1995, on the fringes of the 50th UN General Assembly, then President Fernando Henrique Cardoso met with then President Haydar Aliyev. In 2006, Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov visited Brazil and met with the incumbents of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, and Mines and Energy.
Trade has grown in the past decade. In 2013, however, trade values reached an unprecedented level, given that Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) ordered four E-190 aircraft from EMBRAER and two E-170 aircraft from ECC Leasing (a subsidiary of EMBRAER). In 2019, Brazilian exports to Azerbaijan reached $ 12.1 million. Azerbaijani sales to Brazil reached $ 390 thousand. The Brazilian surplus, on the other hand, exceeds US $ 10 million. Some of the main products exported by Brazil to Azerbaijan (2019) are: metal pipes (26%); cigars and cigarettes (23%); and frozen pork (18%). Brazil imports from Azerbaijan chemicals for industry (99.9%).
In 2013, the 2nd Meeting of Political Consultations was held, led by Itamaraty's Under-Secretary-General for Policy I, Ambassador Antonio Carlos da Rocha Paranhos, and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Araz Azimov – who, during his time in Brazil, also met with the Minister of Defense and Brazilian parliamentarians.
Azad Rahimov, then Azerbaijan's Minister of Youth and Sports, visited Brazil in April 2014, when he met with the then Minister of Sports Aldo Rebelo and signed a bilateral cooperation agreement in the sports area. Aldo Rebelo reciprocated Rahimov's visit in November 2014. Also in 2014, Major General Ramiz Najafov, head of the International Cooperation Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, visited Brazil.
In November 2017, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aloysio Nunes Ferreira, made an official visit to Baku, which had a historic character because it was the first visit by a Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs to the country and the Caucasus region. He held meetings with President Ilham Aliyev, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, and Economy Minister Shahin Mustafayev.

2006 – Signing of Protocol on Political Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan
2006 – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov meets with Brazilian Ministers for the construction of oil and gas pipelines in the Caspian Sea
1997 – The then President of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan, Rasul Guliyev, visits Brazil to negotiate the purchase of agricultural equipment, sugar and chicken; formation of joint ventures in the Caspian oil sector; participation in project financing in Azerbaijan; and presence of Brazilian companies in that country
