Brazil and Albania established diplomatic relations in 1961. In the same year, the two countries signed a Trade and Payments Agreement, which came into force in 1963.
In 1985, the Brazilian Government granted agrément to the first non-resident Ambassador of Albania to Brazil, based in Buenos Aires. In the same year, Brazil's Ambassador in Rome became cumulatively responsible for representing the country in Albania.
In September 2008, the first meeting of heads of government was held on the margins of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games. A year later, Brazil opened a resident diplomatic representation in Tirana with the objective of strengthening ties of friendship, promoting exports and investments, and disseminating Brazilian culture in the Balkan country.
In October 2011, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Albania, Edmond Haxhinasto, visited Brazil and met with the Vice-President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. On that occasion, bilateral agreements were signed on political consultations, economic cooperation, visa regime and cooperation between diplomatic academies.
In March 2012, during a visit to Tirana by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, a bilateral agreement on agricultural cooperation was signed.
In the cultural field, the Brazilian presence was reinforced with the promotion of Brazilian cinema; with the publication of the first two Brazilian works in Albanian, namely, Raízes do Brasil (Roots of Brazil) by Sergio Buarque de Holanda, and História Concisa do Brasil (A Concise History of Brazil) by Boris Fausto); and with the promotion of contemporary Brazilian artists.
The Brazil-Albania trade flow reached US$49.8 million in 2020 (-16.7% compared to 2019), with US$48.7 million (-16.6%) corresponding to Brazilian exports. The main exported products are meats (pork, beef and poultry), iron or steel pipes, sugar and coffee.
