Kingdom of Tonga
The Kingdom of Tonga is an archipelago located in the South Pacific, southeast of the Fiji Islands. This constitutional monarchy has a population of around 107,000 people.
The country was a British protectorate between 1900 and 1970. In 1970, it withdrew from the protectorate and joined the Commonwealth. However, the British Queen is not its head of State, since it has its own monarch.
Tonga’s main economic activities are fishing and agricultural crops of tropical fruits and vegetables, which are consumed domestically but are also exported, especially to New Zealand.
Brazil established diplomatic relations with Tonga in December 2011. Bilateral rapprochement effort was initiated in 2005, when Ambassador Arnaldo Carrilho headed Brazil’s first official mission to Tonga.
The Embassy of Brazil in Wellington is responsible for overseeing bilateral relations with Tonga. Brazil and Tonga have not yet signed any bilateral agreements.
Bilateral trade exchange is modest, amounting to nearly $1 million per year, and is almost entirely composed of Brazilian exports of animal protein.
