Islamic Republic of Iran
Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Iran were established in 1903. High-level visits have contributed to the intensification of bilateral relations over time. Among them, the most notable are the visit of Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to Tehran in September 2015, the visit of the then Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, to Brasília in April 2018, and the participation of Vice President Geraldo Alckmin at the inauguration ceremony of President Masoud Pezeshkian in July 2024.
The Political Consultation mechanism between Brazil and Iran was resumed in 2016, after a hiatus of almost five years. Since then, regular meetings have been held. The latest edition (12th) took place in Brasília, in August 2023.
Bilateral trade has shown significant results for Brazilian agribusiness. In 2024, trade totaled $3 billion (an increase of 30.9% compared to the previous year), as a result of Brazilian exports of $3billion (an increase of 30.7%) and imports of $9.7 million. The surplus was of $2.994 billion in favor of Brazil. The main products exported were unmilled corn (31%), soybeans (28%), soybean meal (28%) and sugar and molasses (14%), while the main items imported were dried fruits and nuts (52%), glassware (9.2%), preserved or prepared fruits (8.6%) and medicines and pharmaceutical products (8.5%).
Iran is an important market for Brazilian agriculture, especially due to the significant demand for commodities such as corn, soybeans and sugar. In recent years, that country has been among the largest importers of Brazilian agribusiness products, which reaffirms the potential for expanding trade and deepening bilateral economic relations.
