Gabonese Republic
Brazil and Gabon established diplomatic relations in the late 1960s. The Embassy of Brazil in Libreville – the only one of a Latin American country in that capital – was established in 1974. The Embassy of Gabon in Brasília, opened in 1976, is the only Gabonese diplomatic representation in Latin America.
In its early years, the relationship was largely driven by Brazilian imports of oil from Gabon. Since the 2000s, bilateral relations have deepened through high-level visits and political consultations meetings.
Cooperation in education is a highlight of the relationship: in the past 20 years, more than 100 Gabonese students obtained a degree from Brazilian universities under the Undergraduate Student-Agreement Program (PEC-G), in which places are offered by the Brazilian side and, in the case of Gabon, scholarships are awarded by the country of origin.
