Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis
The intensification of the relationship between Brazil and Saint Kitts and Nevis is part of a more comprehensive process of political and economic rapprochement with the Caribbean region. A highlight among the initiatives that contributed to this rapprochement was the First Summit Brazil - Caribbean Community (CARICOM) held in 2010, during which Brazil and Saint Kitts and Nevis signed cooperation agreements on culture (in effect) and on education (under ratification).
Regarding the economic and commercial scope, Saint Kitts and Nevis adhered to the Partial Scope Agreement 38, also in 2010, originally signed between Brazil and Guyana in 2001.
In 2015, the Governments of Brazil and Saint Kitts and Nevis signed a Reciprocal Understanding, by exchange of notes on a visa waiver for nationals of both countries.
In addition, a bilateral technical cooperation agreement, signed in 2016, is currently being discussed at the National Congress. This agreement will allow that initiatives in the areas of professional training, health, sports, horticulture, fruit and ethanol can be undertaken.
The closure, in 2019, of the resident Embassy of Brazil in Basseterre (opened in 2009) should not affect the good relationship between the two countries, given that Brazilian interests before Saint Kitts and Nevis will continue to be represented through the Embassy of Brazil in Bridgetown.
In 2019, bilateral trade totaled $3.9 million. Brazilian exports to Saint Kitts and Nevis amounted to $ 3.4 million, while imports from that country accounted for $0.5 million. The bilateral balance is favorable to Brazil with a surplus of $ 2.9 million. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2020, Brazilian exports fell by 10%, and imports from Saint Kitts and Nevis were close to zero.
