Federated States of Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia is composed of 607 islands and small islands located in the North Pacific, east of the Philippines. With a population of around 101,000 people, the federation is a presidential republic.
The country was a German and then a Japanese protectorate. Following World War II, it was administered by the United States. In 1986, it became an independent nation under the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which grants the US national security rights, conduction of foreign policy and allocation of grants.
The country's economy is based on subsistence farming and largely on funding from the agreement with the United States. Main agricultural products are breadfruit, taro, coconut and banana.
The country is a member of the 1982 Nauru Agreement, which aims to promote the coordination and harmonization of tuna fishery management in the eight member countries. The issue is of great relevance to Pacific island countries, which depend to a greater or lesser extent on revenues from fishing licenses for foreign vessels to fund the government. In the case of Micronesia, 56 percent of government revenues in 2016 came from such licenses.
Brazil established diplomatic relations with Micronesia in 2016, following the rapprochement process initiated in 2005 when Ambassador Georges Lamazière headed the first official mission of Brazil to the country .
The Embassy of Brazil in Manila is responsible for bilateral relations with Micronesia. Bilateral agreements have not yet been signed.
Bilateral trade is still modest, hitting its record high in 2005, when it totaled $1.1 million due to Brazilian exports of textile. Since then it trade stabilized at $100 thousand, with a trade balance always favorable to Brazil..
