Federal Republic of Nigeria
Brazil and Nigeria maintain a traditional and diversified relationship, with a strong Nigerian influence in the Brazilian cultural and social formation. In the political sphere, bilateral relations have been intense since Nigeria's independence (1960). The Brazilian Embassy in Nigeria was inaugurated in 1961, and the Nigerian Embassy in Brazil was opened in 1966. Since 1999 there have been frequent exchanges of visits by high-level authorities of both countries, including visits by Heads of State.
As the largest economy and home to the largest population on the African continent, Nigeria is the only country in West Africa – and one of the few in the world - with which Brazil maintains a Strategic Dialogue Mechanism. The first session of the Mechanism was held in Brasília, in November 2013. On that occasion, bilateral work groups were created on topics such as agriculture, food security, and agrarian development; consular and legal affairs; defense; and trade and investment, among others.
