Democratic People's Republic of Korea
Diplomatic relations between Brazil and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) were established in 2001. The North Korean Embassy in Brasília was established in 2005, and the Embassy of Brazil in Pyongyang was opened in May 2009.
In addition to the Joint Communiqué establishing diplomatic relations in March 2001, Brazil and North Korea signed, in May 2007, a Memorandum of Understanding to create a Bilateral Political Consultations Mechanism and, in October 2010, a Basic Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement.
Humanitarian assistance and technical cooperation have played a central part in the bilateral relationship over the years. The Brazilian government made three donations (in 2010, 2011 and 2012), as humanitarian aid, to the North Korean people through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
The Embassy of Brazil in Pyongyang has established a direct communication channel with local authorities and allowed Brazil to monitor in loco developments in the situation of the Korean Peninsula.
