Press release n. 172
The Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E Muhammad Lutfi, and the Ministers of MERCOSUR State Parties: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, H.E Santiago Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, H.E Carlos França, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, H.E Euclides Acevedo, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, H.E Francisco Bustillo, agreed to launch negotiations towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Indonesia and MERCOSUR.
The pursuit of a CEPA represents a significant milestone in the longstanding bilateral relationship underpinned by a shared commitment to rules-based trade and open markets, as well as growing commercial and cultural ties.
The Ministers recognized the potential for a CEPA to support long-term job creation and economic growth, reduce costs for businesses and consumers, and increase bilateral trade and investment.
The Ministers underscored the importance of negotiating a CEPA that is comprehensive and provides benefits that are widely shared by the people of both sides. The Ministers agreed that, without prejudice to the final outcomes, the negotiations would cover mutually agreed areas of interest to both Indonesia and MERCOSUR, including market access, rules to facilitate trade and investment, and cooperation, taking into account each other’s sensitivities.
The Ministers agreed to commence negotiations towards a CEPA and instructed officials to hold the first round of negotiations at the earliest opportunity.
